Janet Harrold
F, b. circa 1817
This research is a work in progress, taken from sources of varying reliability. The information should be verified before being relied upon.
Birth* | Janet Harrold may have been born circa 1817 on the island of Gairsay, Rendall, Orkney, ScotlandG. She was aged 30 in the 1851 census of Gairsay, implying birth about 1821, but on her father's death certificate in January 1855 her age was given as 37, and the birth order stated there has her being born before 1820, so it is likely that the 1855 age is the correct one, implying birth about 1817. |
Marriage* | She married George Harrold, son of Alexander Harrold and Marabel Corston, on 14 December 1854 in the parish of Evie & Rendall, Orkney, ScotlandG. George and Janet were first cousins.1 |
| In the 1841 census there was a Janet Harrold, aged 25-29, living in the parish of St. Andrews, Orkney, and working as a domestic servant. In the same household was a John Harrold, aged 12, who may or may not be a relation. (Census, St. Andrews, 2:6). This same John was probably the John, aged 22, born in Rousay, who was a farm servant in Rousay in 1851 (Census, Rousay, 1:6). He may be the child christened 16 July 1829 (IGI) in Rousay to John Harrold and Barbara Cooper, an as-yet-unrelated family. Janet was living unmarried on her parents' farm in Gairsay in the 1851 census. In the 1871 census of Firth & Stenness (2:3) George and Janet were living at "Turi-a-day" in Firth with their niece Jessy Mackay, daughter of Janet's sister Mary. George was a crofter of 6 acres. In the 1881 census (2:1) the house was called "Turriedale" and the couple were living alone. George was a farmer of 12 acres, 6 of which were arable. No children have been located as yet for this couple, if there ever were any. |

F, b. 15 May 1804
This research is a work in progress, taken from sources of varying reliability. The information should be verified before being relied upon.
Birth* | Ann Harrold was born on 15 May 1804 on the island of Gairsay, Rendall, Orkney, ScotlandG.1 |
| An Ann Harrold married a man named John Bichan in the parish of Evie and Rendall on July 22, 1840. (Evie & Rendall, Orkney, Scotland, Parish Registers, LDS Film No., 919499, 2:78) This is probably "our" Ann, but hasn't been proven conclusively. They were listed in the 1841 (Evie & Rendall, 8:1), 1851 (Rendall, 4:2), and 1861 (Evie & Rendall, 8:2) censuses of Gairsay, with no children included at any time. John was aged 40, 50, and 60 in each of these censuses, born in Rendall. They were not in the 1881 census of Gairsay so may have either moved or died. John may have been born May 5, 1800, as stated in a paragraph above. In 1861 his sister Barbara, aged 55, unmarried, born in Rendall, was living with them. He was a farmer of 4 acres in 1851, 3 acres in 1861, and 4 acres, all arable, in 1871. |

This research is a work in progress, taken from sources of varying reliability. The information should be verified before being relied upon.
Birth* | Robert Harrold was born on 6 June 1811 on the island of Gairsay, Rendall, Orkney, ScotlandG.1 |
Marriage* | He married Jane Scott on 18 December 1855 in the parish of Evie & Rendall, Orkney, ScotlandG.2 |
Death-Unknown* | Where and when Robert Harrold died is not known at present. |
| There was a Robert Harrold, aged 25-29, living as an agricultural laborer in the parish of St. Andrews, Orkney, when the 1841 census was taken (2:6). He has not yet been located in the 1851 census.
Robert and Jane may have had more than four children, but futher records have not yet been searched. According to the 1861 census (Evie & Rendall, 5:5) he was a farmer of 10 acres.
In the 1871 census (Evie & Rendall, 5:4) the family was living in Rendall at the house named "Lower Bratoo", between the homes of his brother John and his nephew David McKay. Robert was a farmer of 9 acres, all arable. All four of their children were listed, the youngest being 7, so it is fairly unlikely that they had any more.
In 1881 (Evie & Rendall, 5:5) they were still at "Lower Brato" (sic), with no additional children. Robert's occupation was listed as "farm servant" this time. Their daughter Jane was the only child living with them at the time. |

Birth* | George Harrold was born on 24 October 1819 on the island of Gairsay, Rendall, Orkney, ScotlandG. The IGI records his birth year as 1819. The 9 is difficult to read but looks more like a 7. In the 1851 census of Rousay (6:3) his age is given as 32, and in the 1861 census of Rousay (6:1-2) his age is given as 42, both of which agree with the 1819 date.1 |
Marriage* | He married Janet Harrold, daughter of John Harrold and Margaret Corston, on 14 December 1854 in the parish of Evie & Rendall, Orkney, ScotlandG. George and Janet were first cousins.2 |
Death* | George died of diabetes on 10 May 1884 at Slades Heddle in Firth, Caithness, ScotlandG.3 |
| There is a George Harrold, aged 20-24, listed in the 1841 census of Rousay (4:5) living with a Yorston family. No other George Harrold of the approriate age has been located in the Orkney census of 1841. In the 1851 census of Rousay George was living unmarried with his parents on the island of Wyre. Ten years later he was still living there, but was married. In both cases his occupation was given as "agricultural laborer". |

Birth* | Hugh Harrold was born circa 1823 in Rendall, Orkney, ScotlandG. Date from census records. The 1851 census says he was born in Rousay and the 1861 census says he was born in Rendall. 1891 says Evie & Rendall. Gravestone says he was 93, which would calculate to a probably birth date in 1821-22, but census records are more likely to be correct. |
Marriage* | He married Margaret Mainland, daughter of Nicol Mainland and Anne Craigie Mainland, on 10 April 1849 in the parish of Rousay & Egilshay, Orkney, ScotlandG.1 |
Death* | Hugh died on 6 February 1915, probably in the parish of Rousay, Orkney, ScotlandG. He was buried in the Wyre Kirkyard on the island of Wyre in the parish of Rousay, aged 93.2 |

His occupation was given as "agricultural laborer". Hugh Marwick, in his book Orkney Farm-Names, p. 73, describes The Bu of Wyre: "This farm is adjacent to the old church and castle (Cubbie Roo's Castle, as it is locally called), and here without any doubt was the homestead of Kolbein Hruga 800 years ago". It was also named the "Bull" of Wyre in some census records. In 1861 he was in the same place (6:3), now listed as head of household, and his occupation was given as "fish curer". A large family of his Mainland in-laws was living in the same house. When his son James died in May 1863 he was still a fish curer living in the same house. In 1871 he was a fisherman employing one woman and one boy, living at "Hall of Wyre" (Census, Rousay, 6:5), but in 1881 and 1891 he was a "grocer and fish curer" living at "Newhall". (Robert Marwick letter) In 1881 he was living at "Newhall" in Wyre. (Robert Marwick letter). In 1891 he was a fish curer and grocer still living at "Newhall". (Census, Rousay, 5:1.) |
