James Nicholson
M, b. 10 May 1860
This research is a work in progress, taken from sources of varying reliability. The information should be verified before being relied upon.
Death* | James died. |
Birth* | He was born on 10 May 1860 on Victoria St. in Kirkwall, Orkney, ScotlandG. The name is spelled Nicolson in the birth record. This was an illegitimate birth, but the father was listed. His birth place was stated as Sandwick in the 1871 census of Kirkwall (3:23), but is probably in error.1 |
| In 1871 he was living with his grandfather James Harrold on Victoria St. In the 1881 census of Kirkwall (3:8) he was still living with his grandfather, at 26 Victoria St., and working as a saddler's apprentice. His name in the census was James N. Harrold, so perhaps he had changed his last name by this time. |

| Jessie came to America around 1912, after her brother John. She lived with her father's cousin Mary (Harrold) Craigie in Medford, Massachusetts, according to her descendants. At the time of their marriage in 1915 Michael was a "groom" and Jessie was a "maid" and they were both living in Westwood. This describes not only their marital statuses but their occupations. Michael was a groom in charge of the polo ponies at the Governor Forbes estate. William Cameron Forbes was governor general of the Philippines from 1909-1913 and ambassador to Japan from 1931-32. He was one of the pioneer polo players in America and wrote a book on the subject. While Michael worked with the horses, Mary was a maid in the mansion. In 1915 Michael gave his occupation as "foreman", while in 1917 and 1919 it was "coachman". They were living in Westwood all three of those years, the last of which was on Clapboardtree St. When all three of their children were married in 1941-47 they were at 892 Clapboardtree St. When Michael died in 1931 his death certificate stated that he had been living on Clapboardtree St. for 25 years, which means he had been there since about 1906. It further stated that he was a veteran of "Cavalry Philipine Is.", and his occupation was horse trainer. After Michael's death W. Cameron Forbes gave the widow Jessie the house they were living in. Across the street was a rooming house for the help that worked on the Forbes farm and Jessie fed them all. Jessie's obituary was not in the Walpole Times. |

| When the 1871 census (1:4) was taken he was living in Firth, but away from home and working as a stable boy for the Rev. David Thomson, minister of the Parish of Firth and Stenness. Ten years later he was married and living on Main St. in Kirkwall, working as a coachdriver. Living with him and his wife were his eldest son John Thomas, and a step-daughter Mary Ann Work. His wife was evidently married to a man named Work prior to this time. (1881 Census, Kirkwall, 1:23-4) In the 1891 census of Kirkwall (1:1) the family as living at 2 Main St. and William was still a coach driver. William's wife Mary was a grocer, and it stated that she was an employer in that job, as opposed t an employee or self-employed. William was an employee. |
