Mary Harrold
F, b. circa 1823, d. 18 March 1911
This research is a work in progress, taken from sources of varying reliability. The information should be verified before being relied upon.
Birth* | Mary Harrold was born circa 1823, possibly on the island of Gairsay, Rendall, Orkney, ScotlandG. |
Marriage* | She married Donald MacKay, son of Alexander MacKay and Margaret Hall, on 2 January 1849 in the parish of Evie & Rendall, Orkney, ScotlandG. They were "booked in order to marriage" on December 2, 1848 and were both from the Island of Gairsay.1 |
Death* | Mary died on 18 March 1911 in Orkney, ScotlandG.2 |
Burial* | She was buried in Finstown Cemetery in Firth, Orkney, ScotlandG.2 |
| In the 1851 census of Gairsay (Rendall, 4:1) Donald and Mary and their son David were living with Mary's parents at "Lower Boray" in Gairsay. Donald's occupation was as a "drainer", which may be what the dictionary defines as "one who constructs field drains". They were still there in 1861 (Evie & Rendall, 8:2) and Donald was still a drainer. They moved from Gairsay to the parish of Firth and Stenness around 1862 or 1863, and in 1871 they were living at 4 Scarth Place in Finstown, Firth. Donald's occupation was "labourer". (Firth & Stenness, 1871 census, 2:10) Ten years later, in the 1881 census of Firth & Stenness (2:5) they were still in Finstown, but at 2 Public Rd., and Donald worked as a letter carrier. |

This research is a work in progress, taken from sources of varying reliability. The information should be verified before being relied upon.
Birth* | David MacKay was born on 28 September 1849 on the island of Gairsay, Rendall, Orkney, ScotlandG.1 |
Marriage* | He married Margaret Taylor, daughter of James Taylor and Isabella Leask, on 10 February 1870 in the parish of Evie & Rendall, Orkney, ScotlandG.2 |
Death* | David MacKay died on 2 June 1935. He probably also died at Cott in Rendall like his wife, but unlike her that information doesn't appear on the gravestone.3 |
| David was probably living with his uncles John and Robert Harrold in Rendall when the 1861 census was taken (Evie & Rendall, 5:5). He is listed as an 11 year old servant, as well as a scholar (meaning he attended school) at the time. His brother Angus was also there. In the 1871 (Evie & Rendall, 5:4) and 1881 (Evie & Rendall, 5:5) censuses of Rendall he was living next to the homes and families of his uncles John and Robert Harrold in a house named "Crook". He gave his occupation as farm servant, likely for one or both of his uncles. David and Margaret had at least four children, surname MacKay: Margaret Ann, David, Jessie, and William. |

It was recorded around 1855 so an error could easily have been made. Information received from relatives agrees with the year being 1849).

Angus MacKay
M, b. 13 May 1851
This research is a work in progress, taken from sources of varying reliability. The information should be verified before being relied upon.
Birth* | Angus MacKay was born on 13 May 1851, possibly on the island of Gairsay, Rendall, Orkney, ScotlandG. The Evie & Rendall parish registers (2:57) record the birth of a child named "Agnus" on May 13, 1851. As this birth was recorded a few years after the fact the person writing it down probably mistook "Angus" for "Agnus" and assumed it was a daughter. In the 1861 census of Gairsay (Evie & Rendall, 8:2) there is no 10 year old child named either Agnus or Angus listed with this family. Data received from relatives state that it was Angus born in 1851, and that he married Louisa Hourston.1 |
Marriage* | He married Louisa Hourston on 22 August 1872 in the parish of Evie & Rendall, Orkney, ScotlandG.2 |
| Angus was probably living with his uncles Robert and John Harrold in Rendall when the 1861 census was taken (Evie & Rendall, 5:5). A David Harrold who is likely his brother was living there as well. In the 1871 census of Rendall (Evie & Rendall, 5:3) there was an Angus MacKay, 19, living with a family of Marwicks as a farm servant. In the 1881 census they were living in Rendall (Evie & Rendall, 6:2) at Breck Cottage with four children. Angus was a farm servant at the time. They may have lived in Firth in 1874 if the place of birth given in the census for their son James is correct. Angus and Louisa had at least four children, surname MacKay: Mary Ann, James, Louise. and Margaret B. |

| She is probably the Margaret F. MacKay who was an 18 year old dairy maid for a family of Johnstons living in Rendall when the 1871 census was taken (Evie & Rendall, 5:3). In 1881 James and Margaret were living at 23 Catherine Place in Kirkwall (Census, 8:10-11) nearby several Harrold families, some of whom are distant relations, at best, if related at all. James' occupation was as a cooper. Living with them was a Hellen McKay (probably Margaret's sister), James Harrold (probably Margaret's cousin) and Angus McKay, probably Margaret's uncle). James and Margaret had at least four children, surname Arthur: James, William, Margaret J., and Alfred Allan. |

This research is a work in progress, taken from sources of varying reliability. The information should be verified before being relied upon.
Birth* | James Smith Arthur was born (christened) 21 August 1855 in Skipsea, Yorkshire, EnglandG. (The IGI has only one James Smith Arthur born in Yorkshire around the correct year, as calculated from census records. This parentage has not been proven yet.) |
Marriage* | He married Margaret Foubister MacKay, daughter of Donald MacKay and Mary Harrold, on 9 December 1875 in the parish of Firth & Stenness, Orkney, ScotlandG.1 |
| James, when only 16 and a cooper's apprentice, was lodging at the residence of Jerome and Barbara Eunson on Shore St. in Kirkwall in the 1871 census (8:1). His living here is unusual. The Eunsons are the parents of Janet Eunson who married James Harrold, son of William Harrold and Elizabeth Grieve, and no apparent relation to "our" Harrold family within three generations. William was the son of William Harrold and Marion Mainland. This earliest William was a contemporary of our earliest known ancestor, James Harrold, and could be a brother, but it would be quite a distant relationship by the time James Arthur entered the family. Also living there was Elizabeth Harrold, daughter of James and Janet. Others in these two Harrold families have been living nearby each other in various censuses, so they were at the very least acquainted, if not knowingly related. |

Birth* | John Thomas MacKay was born on 5 November 1879 in Kirkwall, Orkney, ScotlandG. His birth date is calculated from his age at death of 85 yrs, 2 mos., 29 days. Birthplace taken from 1881 census of Kirkwall (1:23.) |

Death* | John died of pneumonia and heart disease on 3 February 1965 at Waltham Hospital in Waltham, Middlesex County, MassachusettsG. He was buried on February 6th in Ridgelawn Cemetery in Watertown, Mass.2 |
| John came to America at some point before 1912 and may have lived with his relative Mary (Harrold) Craigie. He ran a farm in Walpole, Mass. with his cousin from Scotland Willie Harrold at some point before 1931. This according to John's niece Mary (Doyle) Early. His marriage record in 1920 states that he was a farmer living in Walpole and Annie was a bookkeeper living in Westwood, Mass. When their daughter Nancy was born in 1921 they were living on High St. in Walpole and John was still a farmer. When their son John was born in 1925 John Sr. was an order clerk and they were living at 242 Sycamore St. in Watertown, Mass. A little over two years later, when Edwin was born, the address on the birth record is 247 Sycamore. Whether they moved down the street or one of the two records is in error is unknown at present. John was still an order clerk when Edwin was born. They were still living at 247 Sycamore when they both died in 1954 and 1965. |
