| In 1871, as a one-year old, he was living in Rousay with his mother's parents John and Elizabeth (Reid) Johnston. (Census 3:9) His mother wasn't living with him according to the census, unless she was away from home that day. He later lived at both Kirkha' and Springfield in Rousay ("Rousay Roots"). He was probably married at least once before he married Margaret Ann Sinclair, and it is assumed that his children were by this other wife. "Rousay Roots" mentions only Margaret, and implies that his two children were by her, but they may not be. |

Margaret Harrold
F, b. circa August 1861?, d. 27 February 1944
This research is a work in progress, taken from sources of varying reliability. The information should be verified before being relied upon.
Marriage* | She married William Sutherland. (Robert Marwick letter.) |
Birth* | Margaret Harrold was born circa August 1861? On the island of Wyre, Rousay, Orkney, ScotlandG. Her birth is not in the IGI, but she was a 9 year old member of the family (born in Wyre) in the 1871 census of Rousay (6:5), and Robert Marwick, author of "Rousay Roots", places her in this family. A birth in this family in 1861 or 1862 is unlikely with children born in August 1861 and July 1863, unless perhaps she was a twin to the son James who died young. There was another set of twins in this family, so it wouldn't be unlikely. She may be the Margaret Harrold, age 29, unmarried, born in the parish of Rousay & Egilsay who was a laundry maid residing at Trumland House in Rousay. (Census, 3:15) This was the mansion home of General F.W.T. Burroughs, the notorious proprietor of Rousay. At the time of the census only Margaret and the butler's wife whose name was Ann Logie were in residence. |
Death* | Margaret died on 27 February 1944, probably in Rousay, Orkney, ScotlandG. She was buried in the Brinian Kirkyard on Rousay, aged 82.1 |
