William Harrold
M, b. 1778, d. 9 April 1865
This research is a work in progress, taken from sources of varying reliability. The information should be verified before being relied upon.
Birth* | William Harrold was born in 1778 in Rousay, Orkney, ScotlandG. He was 88 years old when he died, according to his death certificate, which would imply birth in 1776-77, but "Rousay Roots" states his birth date as 1778. |
Marriage* | He married Elizabeth Grieve, daughter of James Grieve and Barbara Grieve, on 8 March 1811 in Rousay, Orkney, ScotlandG. (IGI.) |
Death* | William died on 9 April 1865 at home, Upper Quoys in Sourin, Rousay, Orkney, ScotlandG.1 |
| William Harrold lived at the house called "Upper Quoys" at the time of the 1841 (1:10) and 1851 (1:12) censuses of Rousay, and at "The Blossom" in 1861 (4:6). These were both names for the same dwelling. It was also known as "Hammermugly" at one time. William was a farmer. |

Marriage* | She married William Harrold, son of Unknown Harrold. |
Birth* | Marion Mainland was born say 1752. |
| She also went by the name of Mary Ann. She may have had a sister or sister-in-law named Barbara, because there was a "Barbary" Mainland, aged about 80, living with Marion's son William at Upper Quoys in Rousay in the 1841 census (1:10). |
Elizabeth Grieve
F, b. circa 1781, d. 3 February 1874
This research is a work in progress, taken from sources of varying reliability. The information should be verified before being relied upon.
Birth* | Elizabeth Grieve was born circa 1781 in Rousay, Orkney, ScotlandG. She was 90 in the 1871 census of Rousay (4:10). Her birth record is not in the IGI. |
Marriage* | She married William Harrold, son of William Harrold and Marion Mainland, on 8 March 1811 in Rousay, Orkney, ScotlandG. (IGI.) |
Death* | Elizabeth died on 3 February 1874 at Upper Quoys in Sourin, Rousay, Orkney, ScotlandG. She was not listed with her husband in either the 1851 or 1861 censuses, and has not yet been found elsewhere.1 |
| Her parentage is taken from information on her death record, but there is some doubt about her mother being Barbara. In the 1851 census of Rousay there is a family of James Grieve, age 90 and his wife Barbara Grieve, age 70, that includes his daughter Elizabeth Grieve, a farmer's wife from Wyre, who is aged 70 also. If this is "our" Elizabeth it would explain her absence from her family in the 1851 census, but it would also imply that her mother was a previous wife of James Grieve. More research is needed here.
