Alexander Grieve was born on 30 March 1828 in Egilsay, Orkney, Scotland^G. "Rousay Roots" says his mother's name was Elizabeth, but the christening record in the IGI for 1 June 1828 gives it as Isabel.

Marriage*

He married Margaret McLauchlan Harrold, daughter of William Harrold and Elizabeth Grieve, on 17 February 1854 in Rousay, Orkney, Scotland^G. (IGI.)

Death*

Alexander died on 5 September 1884, probably in Rousay, Orkney, Scotland^G. He was buried in the Scockness Kirkyard on Rousay, aged 66.¹

He was still alive in 1891, aged 93 and living at Lowermill in Sourin, Rousay. His occupation was given as weaver and fisherman in the 1891 census of Rousay. (3:2) His wife Margaret and son Alex were living with him.

In the 1891 census of Rousay (3:2) he was living with his parents at Lowermill in Sourin and was employed as a dryster and fisherman. A dryster is defined as someone who is employed in drying something. He never married.¹

Two years after his wife's premature death John had an illegitimate daughter, Maggie Jean Grieve, b. 4 December 1883, in Rousay, to his first cousin Jane Harrold, daughter of William Harrold and Betsy Marwick. (See her record for more.)
John had a second illegitimate child, a son John Grieve, b. in 1884 to Margaret Leonard. This son married Kitty (presumably Catherine or Kate) Russell of Brendale in Sourin, Rousay and they lived at Runa, Twatt, Birsay, Orkney. John and Kitty had five children (surname Grieve) Harry, James, Ivy, Alexander and Malcolm. This latter James Grieve's widow J. Bessie Grieve currently (1995) lives at Hillview in Harray, Orkney and writes a weekly column, "Countrywoman's Diary" in Orkney's newspaper "The Orcadian". (Source: Bertie Harvey letter.)

She may have been the widow of Archer Clouston from Rousay. She has a grandson from this marriage named Archer Clouston. Mrs. Archer Clouston lives at Viera View, Rousay.
