| Two years after his wife's premature death John had an illegitimate daughter, Maggie Jean Grieve, b. 4 December 1883, in Rousay, to his first cousin Jane Harrold, daughter of William Harrold and Betsy Marwick. (See her record for more.) John had a second illegitimate child, a son John Grieve, b. in 1884 to Margaret Leonard. This son married Kitty (presumably Catherine or Kate) Russell of Brendale in Sourin, Rousay and they lived at Runa, Twatt, Birsay, Orkney. John and Kitty had five children (surname Grieve) Harry, James, Ivy, Alexander and Malcolm. This latter James Grieve's widow J. Bessie Grieve currently (1995) lives at Hillview in Harray, Orkney and writes a weekly column, "Countrywoman's Diary" in Orkney's newspaper "The Orcadian". (Source: Bertie Harvey letter.) |
