Birth*John Harrold was born on 22 May 1813 on the island of Gairsay, Rendall, Orkney, ScotlandG.1
Marriage*He married Margaret MacKay, daughter of Alexander MacKay and Margaret Hall, on 22 May 1862 in Canisbay, Caithness, ScotlandG
Death-Unknown*Where and when he died is not known at present.
His occupation was given as "boat carpenter" in the 1841 census of Gairsay (Evie & Rendall, 8:3). By the 1851 census he was no longer living on Gairsay, but has yet to be located elsewhere. In the 1861 census of Rendall (Evie & Rendall, 5:5) he was living unmarried in the same house, "Bratoo-Breck" as his brother Robert Harrold and family. John's age was given as 46 in that census, when he would actually have been 48 going on 49. He was listed as a farmer of 10 acres, the same as his brother, so it may have been the same 10 acres. He was listed as a head of household, as was Robert, but he had two servants (Margaret Mainland, age 22, and David McKay, age 11) living with him, a nephew Angus McKay, age 9, and a visitor Jessie Mainland, age 25. This Angus was probably his sister Mary's son, and David McKay could well be Angus' brother, although he was listed as servant in the census.
John was the informant on his mother's death certificate in December 1870, and his place of residence was given as "Bretto, Rendall". In the 1871 census of Rendall (Evie & Rendall, 5:4) John and his wife Margaret were still living in "Bratoo Brack". He was a farmer of 9 acres, all arable. Living with them was their daughter Sarah as well as 15 year old Johan McKay, also listed as their daughter, born in Rendall. She may be the daughter of one of Margaret McKay's brothers, or perhaps a cousin. John's brother Robert and family were living next door, and in the next house was his nephew David McKay and wife Margaret.
In the 1881 census of Rendall (Evie & Rendall, 5:5) they were still at "Brato Breck" and John was a farmer of 40 acres, 12 of which were arable. John and Margaret were living with their daughter Sarah Ann, who was a dressmaker's apprentice, and their grandniece Margaret Ann McKay, granddaughter of John's sister Mary, who was attending school.

In the 1851 and 1861 censuses of Gairsay he was unmarried and living on his parents' farm. His death record gave his occupation as farm servant.
