Birth* | John Harrold Craigie Jr. was born on 19 July 1907 in Keene, Cheshire County, New HampshireG.1,2 |
Death* | John died after being hit by a car on 24 December 1913 on Elm St. in Stoneham, Middlesex County, MassachusettsG. The weekly "Stoneham Independent" newspaper for Dec 27, 1913 carried this story on its front page:
FATAL AUTO ACCIDENT. Automobile Driven by Thomas H. McKenna of This Town Strickes (sic) Craigie Lad Near Junction of Elm and Tremont Sts, Wednesday Afternoon, and Inflicts Fatal Injuries. Another fatal automobile accident occurred on Elm st. near its junction with Tremont, early Wednesday afternoon, when John Craigie, the nine [actually six] year old son of Mr. and Mrs. John H. Craigie of Duncklee ave., was struck by a car owned and driven by Thomas H. McKenna of the firm of McKenna Bros., provision dealers of this town, and sustained frightful injuries, which he survived only a short time. The Craigie lad was riding down Elm St. in S.G. Hanson's jobbing wagon and as he jumped out the rear end, he emerged without warning into the path of Mr. McKenna's auto, which was just passing Mr. Hanson's team. There was no opportunity for Mr. McKenna to stop his car, which according to eye witnesses was being driven at a good rate of speed. The stricken lad was removed to a house nearby, but it was evident that his hurts were mortal and he passed away within a few minutes. The affair was most unfortunate and was one of those things that happen in the twinkling of an eye. Funeral services will be held this Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the late home. Burial will be at Lindenwood cemetery."
The death certificate lists the injuries suffered in the accident as fractures to the skull, right thigh and left shoulder.3 |
Burial* | He was buried on 27 December 1913 Lindenwood Cemetery in Stoneham, Middlesex County, MassachusettsG. The "Stoneham Independent" for January 3, 1914 carried news of the funeral on page two: "There was a large gathering of relatives and friends at the funeral services held for John Craigie, the 8 [actually six] year old lad who lost his life in the sad auto fatality the day before Christmas, at the home of his parents on Duncklee ave, last Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock. The services were simple and impressive, Rev. Arthur Stanley Beale being the officiating clergyman. Rev. Mr. Beale spoke words of consolation to the bereaved parents, who have the sympathy of the community in their sad loss, and read appropriate scriptural selections. The interment was made in Lindenwood cemetery. The floral offerings were profuse and beautiful."
Just below this piece was the following: "The state highway commission has suspended the automobile license of Thomas E. McKenna of this town, whose auto ran down and killed the Craigie lad Dec. 24, on Elm St."2 |

Dorothy Jean “Dot” Craigie, 86, of Stoneham, died peacefully September 21, 2007. She was the beloved wife of the late Robert S. Craigie. Born and raised in Beverly, she was the daughter of the late George L. and Alice (Sands) Worcester. Mrs. Craigie was a graduate of Beverly High School, Class of 1940 and a graduate of the Beverly Hospital School of Nursing in 1943. She practiced as an obstetric nurse at Winchester Hospital for many years. She had resided in Stoneham since 1947. She was very devoted to her church, where she was a deaconess, past president of the Amica Class and a member of the Friendly Service and the Craft Group. Mrs. Craigie and her husband always sat on the 10th row on the right and she claimed this pew for the past 60 years. She was accomplished in knitting and quilting, and she would take a knitting project along wherever she went. Mrs. Craigie was well liked and had a pleasant easygoing personality. She most enjoyed family gatherings and meeting with friends that always centered around fellowship and food. A group of her dear friends, several of whom had worked with her over the years at Winchester Hospital, formed the “S&B Club,” often meeting to quilt and chat. Mrs. Craigie was a “diehard” Red Sox fan, and she was happy to know during her last days that her team was still in first place. Besides following baseball, she would have an ongoing jigsaw puzzle spread out on the card table and be working on a crossword puzzle. Mrs. Craigie was very fond of her dogs and missed each one, Terry, Sebastion and Bambam. She is survived by her daughter, Barbara J. Craigie of Manchester, N.H; two sons, Paul B. Craigie and his wife, Jeanne E., of Stoneham and David S. Craigie and his wife, Cheryl L., of Woburn; six adoring grandchildren, Karen Tesniere and David Tesniere of New Hampshire, Adam Craigie of Malden, Ben Craigie of Charlestown, Margaret Kelley and Caitlin Kelley of New Hampshire; two great-grandchildren, Brandyn and Madison Tesniere; her sister, Priscilla Jank and her husband, Gerald, of Indiana; and many nieces and nephews. She was also the sister of the late Margaret W. Marisden and Ruth E. Worcester. A funeral service was held September 24 at the First Congregational Church in Stoneham, followed by burial in Lindenwood Cemetery, Stoneham. Arrangements were under the direction of the Anderson-Bryant Funeral Home of Stoneham.4 |
