Birth* | Charles Dexter was born on 26 November 1901 at 16 Frothingham St. in Boston, Suffolk County, MassachusettsG.1 |
Marriage* | He married Frances Annie Morrison Craigie, daughter of Arthur Harold Craigie and Dorothy Marguerite Morrison, on 5 January 1946 in Hudson, Hillsborough County, New HampshireG. Charles and Frances were married again on 6 November 1960 at the First Congregational Church in Boston, Mass.2 At the time of their second marriage Charles was an iron worker living with Frances at 42 St. Martin St. in Charlestown, Mass. Charles and Frances got married again because for some reason their first marriage wasn't legal in Massachusetts.3 |
Death* | Charles died of lung cancer on 24 May 1975 at home, 16 Astor St. in Lynn, Essex County, MassachusettsG. His body was also donated to the Tufts Medical School in Somerville, Mass.4 |
| Charles probably had no middle name, although on some documents he gave his name as Arnold Gilbert Dexter. His birth certificate had simply "Charles Dexter", but on 2 June 1923 when he married his first wife Edith Manning Lent in Medford, Mass. he called himself Arnold Gilbert Dexter.5 "Charles" and Edith had five children: Robert, Arnold, Ray (female), Natalie, and Clifford. On the birth certificate of Clifford in 1932 the name of the father is again Arnold Gilbert Dexter. No birth certificate by that name could be located and the reason for the differing names is not known at present. Charles and Edith were divorced in 1945. After his second wife Frances died in 1965 he married for a third and final time, in Seabrook, NH on 6 August 1966, Lorraine Marie Vienneau. Lorraine already had a daughter Michelle Ann Vienneau which Charles adopted, and they had a son together named David Robert Dexter. It was his 15th child, born to him at the age of 67. |

John Harrold Craigie
M, b. probably 17 May 1870, d. 15 September 1950
This research is a work in progress, taken from sources of varying reliability. The information should be verified before being relied upon.
Birth* | John Harrold Craigie was born probably 17 May 1870 in Edinburgh, ScotlandG. John was probably born before his parents' marriage. This birth record is for a John Charles Harrold, father unknown, and is probably the correct one. More research must be done to prove it.1 |
Marriage* | He married Florence Marion Carbee, daughter of Solomon S. Carbee and Maria Holt, on 5 May 1896 in Boston, Suffolk County, MassachusettsG. At the time of their marriage John was employed as a clerk. They both gave their residence as Boston. They were married at the Episcopal "Church of the Good Shepherd" by the Rev. Samuel Stanley Searing. (Church of the Good Shepherd, Parish Registers, 1:226)
John and Florence were married a second time on 25 Nov 1897 in Bath, N.H.2 At the time of this "second marriage" John was a machinist and both were living in Concord, N.H. They were married this time by the Rev. R.T. Wolcott of Haverhill, N.H. The two marriage records for this couple are impossible to explain with certainty. One might guess that they were married in secret in Boston, then a year and a half later decided to do it publicly for their families. It is also possible that the first marriage was annulled or they were divorced, only to remarry later. Their entry in the 1900 census of Concord taken on 5 June 1900 says they had been married for two years. This correlates with a marriage in November of 1897, but a marriage in May of 1896 would have been more than 4 years prior to the census. This would seem to indicate that they were not admitting to the earlier marriage at the time.
The two marriage records give some conflicting information too. The Boston marriage record says Florence was 21 and born in Woodsville, N.H., while the Bath marriage 1 1/2 years later says she was still 21 but born in Haverhill, N.H. Her recorded birth certificate is from Lyme, and the place of birth given on the birth certificates of her first two children is also Lyme. The Bath marriage record also gives her mother's maiden name as Maria Hathaway, while the Boston record has it correctly as Holt. The marriage record of Solomon S. Carbee and Maria Holt is in Bath on 14 Jan 1858.3 |
Death* | John died of a heart attack on 15 September 1950 at Metropolitan State Hospital in Lexington, Middlesex County, MassachusettsG. He died after a long illness and was cremated at Mt. Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge, Mass. on September 19th.4 |
| John was likely illegitimate at birth, true father unknown. His birth certificate reads John Charles Harrold and states that he was born at 9:30 p.m. at 17 New St. in Canongate, Edinburgh. When he emigrated to the U.S. in 1874 with his parents his age was given as 4. In the 1880 census his age was 10. Four years later, in 1884, on a return trip from Scotland with his family his age was given as 11. For the remainder of his life his age was adjusted to imply that he was born after his parents were married. On a Masonic membership card from 1916 his birthdate is recorded as 17 May 1872, so the 17 May 1870 birth record for a John Charles Harrold is very likely him. As this day and month are so close to the illegitimate birth to Mary Harrold in 1870, it seems likely that the 1870 illegitimate birth is the correct one. His mother married James Christie Craigie two years later in May 1871. Their first child born after their marriage was their daughter Mary Jane who was born in Feb 1873, not leaving a lot of time for John to be born before her. James and Mary were first cousins once removed and living together at the time of their marriage, and there is evidence that their families had known each other for some time, so it is entirely possible that James is the birth father of John, although he would have been only 17 at the time while Mary was 23. It's also possible that James was not the father and married his cousin after she had a child.
John grew up with his parents in Scotland, the Boston area and, perhaps, Concord, N.H. until about 1895-6. In these years his occupation was listed as either clerk or salesman.
At some point he went to college at the Boston Conservatory of Music. He met his wife at a summer resort in Florida where they both worked, he playing the piano and she as a singer. In 1896, the year they got married, he was living at 50 Chambers Street in Boston and working as a music teacher. The family moved next to Concord, N.H., where his parents were living, and the 1898 Concord city directory has them at 20 Union Street and says John was working as a machinist in the state prison there. When the 1900 census was taken they were renting at 119 North State Street in Concord and he gave his occupation as machinist. Two years later he was at the same address and working as a machinist for the Boston & Maine Railroad in Concord. The 1904 directory gives their address as 57 South Spring Street.
For a brief time they were living at 6 Trull Street in Somerville, Mass., which is where the 1906 Somerville directory lists him, and he was working as a draftsman. By July of 1907 when their son John Jr. was born they were living in Keene, N.H.. The 1907 Keene city directory says he was living at 172 Main Street. The 1909-10 directory gives their address as 97 Wilber Street and he was now a draftsman for the B&M railroad shop.
The Wakefield, Stoneham, North Reading and Lynnfield Directory for 1909 (hereafter WSNRL), Stoneham, Mass. section, states that he had removed to Keene, NH. The Stoneham Street Directory (hereafter SSD) for 1909 lists him at 110 Elm Street in Stoneham. The 1909 Boston directory states that he lived in Stoughton, Mass. In May 1910 the census placed the family at the 110 Elm Street address in Stoneham and John was still a draughtsman for the B&M railroad. By the time the 1910 SSD came out they were at 40 Summer Street in Stoneham. The 1911 WSNRL lists them at 55 Summer Street in Stoneham. His father's obituary from April 1912 places them in Auburndale (Newton), Mass. During these years the directories state that he was a draftsman working at North Station in Boston, presumably still for the railroad.
On 12 June 1912 they purchased a home on Duncklee Ave. in Stoneham (Middlesex Co. South, Mass. Deeds 3704:33) where he lived for the rest of his life. The directories list the following addresses: 1912-1919: 19 Duncklee Ave. (SSD) 1915-1931: 21 Duncklee Ave. (WSNRL) 1922-1928: 21 Duncklee Ave. (SSD) 1934-1938: 57 Duncklee Ave. (WSNRL)
Number 21 was the apartment upstairs of number 19, and during WWII they rented that out to soldiers returning from the war. The street numbers were renumbered at some point so that the house was later number 57. The 1920 and 1930 censuses have them at 21 Duncklee, while the 1940 reflects the change to 57.
From 1915 until his retirement in about 1947 he worked as a traveling salesman. The 1917-21 Boston city directories say he worked out of 40 Court Street, rm. 615. The 1920 census says he was a commercial salesman in the iron and steel industry, 1930 says he was a commercial traveller in the steel industry, and in 1940 he was a salesman in the structural steel industry. His obituary says that he was a salesman in the New England territory for the Ulster Iron Co. of Dover, NJ.
John's family was a lot better off financially than were the families of his brothers, probably because he was the only one of them to go to college. His obituary in the Stoneham Independent (Sept. 21, 1950, p.10) states that he was "well known as an excellent chess player and a lover of music." It also said he was a member of the King Cyrus Lodge of Masons of Stoneham and of the White Mountain Lodge of Odd Fellows of Concord, NH. He was a member of the First Congregational Church of Stoneham for many years and served at one time as deacon and again as Sunday School teacher.
Florence lived at 32 Franklin Street in Stoneham for the five years and 9 months before her death in February 1966. She spent her winters in Sarasota, Florida while keeping the home on Duncklee Ave. in Stoneham for a while. Their son Robert and his family took over the home and remained there for the rest of their lives, eventually passing it on to their son Paul and his family.
"Florence's obituary read, in part, "In her younger years she was very much a part of the town. She was especially active in the First Congregational Church and a past matron of the Evergreen Rebekah Lodge, Order of the Eastern Star." (Stoneham Press, Feb. 10, 1966, p.8.) |
