Demise of Henry Kerr
The announcement of the death in his 47th year of Mr. Henry Kerr, L.N.E.R. Permanent Way Inspector, 1 Cross Road, has caused pangs of regret to a wide circle of friends. Mr. Kerr, who was of a bright and cheerful disposition, contracted a chill quite recently, and, though no grave apprehensions were entertained as to his recovery, complications set in, and after a brief illness he passed to his rest on Saturday, leaving behind him a widow and familiy of five, three sons and two daughters, for all of whom much sympathy is felt in their sore bereavement. Apart from the few years of his youth spent in Penicuik, Mr. Kerr was a Peeblean born and bred, and he had many associations with the county town. He was at one time a member of the School Management Committee, and served for a term on the Board of Management of the Co-operative Society. He was also a member of the local Court of the Ancient Order of Foresters. In a working capacity he had to his credit thirty-four years of continuous service with the London and North-Eastern and old North British Railway Companies, and was for twenty-one years inspector of that part of the permanent way which has Peebles as its centre. It was a rather notable record that in filling this post Mr. Kerr followed in the footsteps of his father and grandfather. He was fond of spending leisure hours on the green of the Peebles Bowling Club, of which he was an enthusiastic member, while he was also a Vice-President of the local Carpet Bowling Club. Many town friends and railway colleagues from far and near paid tribute to his memory on Tuesday afternoon, when the funeral took place to Peebles Cemetery. |
