Death* | David died. |
Birth* | He was born. |
Marriage* | He married Jean Graham on 6 June 1665 in Holm And Paplay, Orkney, ScotlandG.1 |
| David Craigie who married Jean Graham belongs in this family somewhere, but there are confliciting pieces of evidence as to where. According to one source, he is a younger brother of William Craigie who married Margaret Halcro. Looking at the dates this seems to be very unlikely. His "brother" William married in 1622 and died before 1652, while David married in 1665. William, being the primary heir to his father would be the oldest son, but the dates have David marrying 43 years later than his older brother. Possible, but unlikely. According to other sources, David Craigie of Over-Sanday is the brother of Hugh Craigie of Gairsay who was deceased by 1670, likely making him the son of William and Margaret (Halcro) Craigie, rather than William's brother. Evidence of the sibling relationship to Hugh reads: On 25th May, 1670, David Craigie of Over-Sanday desired at a Sederunt [some type of church assembly] (the Lord Bishop being present) "in respect his umquhile [deceased] brother, Hugh Craigie of Gairsay, left in legacie to the church £5 sterling, which himself had delivered to the church thesaurer (as was well knawn to the members of the session), that the burial place, quhich is beside the sixt and sevent pillar from the west church dore on the south syde, where his father, mother, and foresaid brother lyis all interred, may be appropriated to ther familie, and that no other persone have privilege to bury the died there ; which desire my Lord Bishope and session thought reasonable, and hes appropriate the said ground to their familie, with this provision, that they hold up the glasse window above the said burial-place." The dates, as well as a direct quote from an original record, appear to make the second source the more likely, so David is inserted into the family here. Another source concurs, but there is still a possibility that they are wrong. More research is needed. David is mentioned in more than one source as "of Over Sanday". Some of the births in his family, as well as his marriage, took place in the parish of Holm. There is a location in Holm today called "Upper Sanday", so perhaps that is where he was from. David was Provost of Kirkwall in 1674 and 1684. He was a member of Parliament for Kirkwall in 1681-82, and 1685-88. |
