| Patrick was "of Wasdale" and was Provost of Kirkwall from 1659 to 1682. He had a house in Kirkwall at what is now nos. 79 to 81 Victoria Street. His father William had been a successful merchant, and Patrick improved and expanded the business. In 1649 he was elected Bailie, a magisterial position. In the years that followed he led an active municipal career as Bailie and Provost, which is described at some length by B.H. Hossack in his book "Kirkwall in the Orkneys", pages 339-341. During the Cromwellian Civil war he was sent to Edinburgh in 1658 to represent the interests of the Town Council for a year, but after the Restoration in 1660 was entwined in political problems that eventually led to the loss of all his business holdings, stranding him with a huge debt. This debt, which he couldn't pay, landed him in the Kirkwall prison where he died in 1682. Patrick and Anne only had one child. |

Marriage* | He married Christian Monteith, daughter of John Monteith.1,2 |
Birth* | Thomas Craigie was born circa 1609.2 |
Death* | Thomas died in February 1686.1 |
| There is some doubt as to his parentage. One source states that he is the son of William Craigie and Marion Irving, while another states that his father was Magnus Craigie of Skaill in Rousay. For the purpose of this report he is placed under William Craigie, but that could very well be wrong. He lived at Saviskaill in Rousay, the first of the line to live at that farm for several generations to come. In 1651 he gave a receipt to John Pottinger of Kirkwall for interest on 300 merks for the years 1640 to 1651, which is witnessed by Magnus Craigie in Langskaill. According to the first source he had three children, William, George and Marjory, while the second source states that he had four, William, Katherine, Helen, and Magnus. The first source also states that all three of his children (William, George and Marjory) were mentioned on 6 April 1671 when their parents disposed of half of their moveables to their son, William. For the purpose of this report all six will be included here. |

Birth* | Thomas Craigie was born. |
Marriage* | He married Jean Corner, daughter of Andrew Corner and Jean Baikie, on 21 August 1691 in the parish of Kirkwall-St.Ola, Orkney, ScotlandG.1,2,3 |
| Thomas was "of Saviskaill" and is noted on 21 August 1691 as the elder lawful son of the late William Craigie, his father, and oye [grandchild] and apparent heir to the deceased Thomas Craigie. There are two conflicting sources of information as to his children. One source states that he had George, William, Alexander, Elizabeth and another unnamed child, while another source states that he was the father of John, who in turn was the father of the previously mentioned George, as well as a daughter Mary. We know that Thomas Craigie married Jean Corner in 1691, and that George Craigie married Barbara Traill in 1740. While it is possible that they are father and son, the dates more likely suggest that there is a generation missing between them, so for the purposes of this report we will assume that the second source is correct and that George is son of John and grandson of Thomas. We will further assume that all the other children ascribed to Thomas and to John in these conflicting sources do belong there. Obfiously more research is necessary here. |
