Jeremiah Wallingford
M, b. 11 October 1740, d. by 1783
This research is a work in progress, taken from sources of varying reliability. The information should be verified before being relied upon.
Birth* | Jeremiah Wallingford was born on 11 October 1740 in Bradford, Essex County, MassachusettsG.1 |
Marriage* | He married, Abigail White, on 1 September 1765, in Kittery, York County, MaineG. They were married by the an unknown person of Kittery. They were both living in Kittery when they filed their intention to marry there on 4 July 1765.2.3 |
Death* | Jeremiah died by 1783. In 1783 a deed given by his wife confirmed an assumption that he was dead, having long been away. [Rockingham Deeds, 114:513?]4 |
| Jeremiah was a member of the Massachusetts Provincials during the French and Indian War. In 1758 he served in Captain Samuel George's company of Colonel Jonathan Bagley's Massachusetts regiment, which mainly recruited from northeastern Massachusetts and the greater Boston area. In 1758 Bagley's regiment marched to the southern shores of Lake George, where they prepared to attack the French-held Fort Carillon (later renamed to Fort Ticonderoga] as part of General James Abercromby's army. Bagley's regiment participated in the Battle of Carillon on July 8, 1758 where they were defeated by French troops, then retreated back to camp at Lake George, where they spent the rest of the campaign season. [Fort Ticonderoga Online Collections, , date viewed 6 Nov 2023]. Later his father James Wallingford petitioned the Massachusetts government asking for reimbursement of his expenses in bringing his sick son home. It is undated but is amongst other documents dated in 1759 in the Massachusetts Archives Collection. James states that "last summer" during his time as a soldier in the said regiment his son Jeremiah was "taken Sick as he was Returning home and was not able to Travel but Stoped at Worcester at One Mr. Browns that Your Petitioner Went to Sd Worcester to fetch him home and brought him as far as Westbury and he was not able to come any further and I left him at one Mr. Howards in Sd Westbury and Returnd home that in december last I hired a chare [obsolete term for a cart or wagon] and went to Westbury and fetched him home Very weak and Ill: And that Your Petitioner was at Three pounds Charge for Time and Expence in fetching him home And one pound two shilling Charge for Doctor and Nursing after he came home As may appear by the Accts herewith Exhibited. Your Petitioner Therefore (being a Poor man and having a Great Family) Humbly prays that he may be Reimbursted and Paid the sd four pounds two shillings." James signed the petition. No answer to this petition has been found.
Jeremiah was left only 20 pounds in his father's will.5 As the eldest son you'd think he would receive more, as well as the father's land, so this may be evidence to support the premise that he had moved away to Kittery, Maine.
Parish records of the First Church and Society of Kittery, Maine contain references to a Jeremiah and Abigail Wallingford. On 6 July 1766 they renewed their baptismal covenant.6 Shackford is uncertain about the parentage of the Jeremiah who married Abigail White, so more research is necessary to prove a link here.
The Massachusetts tax valuation taken in 1771 shows Jeremiah Wallingford in Kittery with only 1 rateable poll (meaning one adult male), half a house, and a tax of 4 shillings annually. No livestock or farmland are accounted for.7
The 1790 census of Kittery shows an Abigail Wallingford as head of a family that contains four females.8 It is likely that they had more children than the one recorded here. |

Nicholas Wallingford
M, b. 13 July 1744, d. before 7 June 1785
This research is a work in progress, taken from sources of varying reliability. The information should be verified before being relied upon.
Birth* | Nicholas Wallingford was born on 13 July 1744.1 |
Marriage* | He married Sarah (?) on 7 December 1772 in Plaistow, Rockingham County, New HampshireG.2 |
Death* | Nicholas died before 7 June 1785. Nicholas was executor of his father's estate and is last mentioned in those probate records on 4 March 1782. Administration of his own estate was granted to his widow on 7 June 1785. |
| Nicholas was made executor of his father's will of 3 December 1776, and to him was left all the remainder of his father's lands both in Newbury and in Bradford, as well as the west end of the dwelling house in which his mother and sisters would also be living. After his mother and sisters married or died he would get the entire house. Finally Nicholas would receive the remainder of his father's personal estate not already accounted for.3
He is likely the Nicholas Wallingford who served a short time during the Revolutionary War. He served a total of five days, from 30 November to 4 December 1775 in Captain John Savory's detachment from the 2nd Bradford Co. They marched for the defense of Cape Ann but came back in only a few days. The muster roll was dated at Bradford and sworn to at Andover, Mass.4 A John Savory was also one of the witnesses to the will of Nicholas' father James. Savory and Nicholas Wallingford both appeared on 4 February 1782 for the probating of the will.
On 21 March 1797, a division of real estate from the estate of Nicholas' father James was made by Lemuel Wood of Boxford, and Silas Hopkinson and Thomas Wood of Bradford, the latter probably being the second husband of Nicholas' wife Sarah. This was the land left to the grandson Nathaniel and his mother for their use until his 21st birthday, which had just occurred. In the division Nicholas (or more likely his widow and family as he was deceased by this time) received 8 acres, 100 poles and Nathaniel received 6 acres, 60 poles. The latter piece of land was bounded by the original dwelling house of James Wallingford where his widow and daughters Betty and Judith were still living.3
Administration on the estate of Nicholas Wallingford, yeoman, of Bradford, deceased intestate, was granted to his widow Sarah on 7 June 1785. John Savory, Gentleman, and Solomon Tenney, yeoman, both of Bradford, gave bond. Sarah made her mark while the other two signed. On 27 June 1785 an inventory of his estate was taken by Capt. John Savory, Solomon Tenny and Ebenezer Hopkinson, all of Bradford. The total estate was valued at £142-11-8. This included part of a house and barn, about five acres of pasture land, other lands in "revertion", about eight acres of home land, four more acres of pasture, and three acres of common fields. Among his personal estate was "military armor", one pig, and one cow. A division of his estate was made on 29 March 1786 by John Savory, Thomas Tenny and Solomon Tenny. The widow Sarah received the west end of the house where she was then dwelling, with the cellar and barn. The land was bounded by the widow Richardson, the widow Abigail Platts, the heirs of James Wallingford, and Stephen Morse. The widow Sarah made her administrator's account on 3 July 1787 and it included mention of 4 1/2 acres of pasture land sold to Moses Wood. In an additional accounting made 12 years later on 6 May 1799 Sarah is now Sarah Wood and her husband Thomas signs the account, while Sarah makes her mark. That account mentions land sold to Nathaniel Wallingford, probably her nephew. None of the children of Nicholas were ever mentioned in his probate papers.5 |
| When Nicholas and Sarah were married in December 1772 they were both living in Bradford, Essex County, MassachusettsG.2 |

Betty Wallingford
F, b. after 1755, d. 16 March 1830
This research is a work in progress, taken from sources of varying reliability. The information should be verified before being relied upon.
Birth* | Betty Wallingford was born after 1755, probably in Bradford, Essex County, MassachusettsG. Her birth is not listed in the Bradford vital records, but her family probably lived there at the time. Her gravestone, if it is indeed hers, says she was aged 80 when she died in 1830, implying birth around 1750. However she was less than 21 years of age when her father wrote his will in December 1776, so would have to have been born after December 1755. In that will he continually mentioned Betty in association with her sister Judith, and always listed Betty first, so she is likely older than Judith. |
Death* | Betty died unmarried, of rheumatic fever, on 16 March 1830, in Bradford, Essex County, MassachusettsG. Betty is buried in the old cemetery in Groveland (formerly East Bradford), Mass., having died on this date "Aged 80". Other members of her family are buried there as well.1 She is "Betty" on her gravestone and "Betsey" in the published Bradford VRs..2 |
| After her father's death she apparently lived single with her mother and sister Judith in the family home in East Bradford, now Groveland, Mass. It is likely the three of them living in the household of Martha Walingsford in Bradford in the 1790 census.3
Betty wrote a will dated 30 May 1828 in which she describes herself as a singlewoman, of Bradford, being infirm of body but of sound mind. She divided her entire estate equally between her niece Sarah Freeman and nephew James Wallingford. She appointed Nathaniel Wallingford of Bradford sole executor and the will was witnessed by David Stickney, James Hardy and Katharine Stickney. On 30 March 1830 Nathaniel Wallingford (likely her nephew) was ordered to appear at the probate court in Ipswich to present the will on 3 April 1830. On April 20 Nathaniel, of Bradford, yeoman, gave bond with David Stickney, Esq, and William Greenough, Esq., both of Bradford, and Nathaniel presented the will. On 29 June the inventory of the estate was made by Daniel Stickney, Esq., Daniel Hopkinson Jr., and William Griffiths, all of Bradford. There was no real estate, but the total personal estate was valued at $358.39, including half of a gallery pew in the Bradford East Parish meetinghouse. That same day the administrator's account was presented and showed outlays to the two beneficiaries, Sarah Freeman and James Wallingford, of $170.38 1/2 each.4 |

F, b. after 1755, d. 29 December 1825
This research is a work in progress, taken from sources of varying reliability. The information should be verified before being relied upon.
Birth* | Judith Wallingford was born after 1755, probably in Bradford, Essex County, MassachusettsG. Her birth wasn't recorded in the Bradford records but her family was probably living there at the time. Church records of her death give her age as 69 while her gravestone says 71, which would imply a birth between 1754 and 1756. She was less than 21 years of age when her father wrote his will in December 1776, so would have to have been born after December 1755. In that will he continually mentioned Judith in association with her sister Betty, and always listed Betty first, so she is likely older than Judith. |
Death* | Judith died unmarried, of palsy, on 29 December 1825, in Bradford, Essex County, MassachusettsG. She is likely the "Miss Juda Wallingford" buried in the old cemetery in Groveland (formerly East Bradford), Mass. The gravestone records her age as 71. Her parents and sister are also buried in the same cemetery.1 Records of the Bradford Second Congregational Church in East Bradford, now Groveland, record her age at death as 69, as well as her cause of death.2
