Birth*Sarah (?) was born circa 1748. (She was aged 70 when she died.)
Marriage*She married Nicholas Wallingford, son of James Wallingford Jr. and Martha Wallingford, on 7 December 1772 in Plaistow, Rockingham County, New HampshireG.1
Marriage*She married second Thomas Wood, son of Moses Wood and Mehitable Stickney, on 25 February 1796 in Bradford, Essex County, MassachusettsG. Thomas Wood was the son of Moses Wood and Mehitable Stickney and was born in Bradford on 8 April 1744 and died there 13 June 1813. He was first married to Alice Bailey in Bradford on 8 July 1770. Alice was born in Bradford, 25 February 1746 to Joseph Bailey and Elizabeth Boynton and died 23 or 25 February 1795 in Bradford. Thomas and Alice had several children born in Bradford.23
Death*Sarah died of consumption on 7 February 1819 in Bradford, Essex County, MassachusettsG. This death record is for the widow Sarah Wood, and as Thomas died in 1813 it is probably our Sarah.4
Her name was "Sally" on her son James' death record. She may be a relation of the James Palmer "housewright" of Bradford who was made executor of the estate of her father-in-law James Wallingford in place of her husband Nicholas, who had apparently died. It is also worth looking into the John Savory and Solomon Tenney who crop up frequently in probate records of this family. There are no births in Bradford for a Sarah Savory, Tenney, Wood or Palmer that could be her. Given her apparent age of 26 at her marriage to Nicholas she could also have been a young widow at the time. Their marriage record in Plaistow read only "Nicholas & Sarah Wallingford, both of Bradford, 7 Dec 1772" which might imply that she was also a Wallingford, but there were several other marriages in the records that had no maiden names as well.
When they were married in December 1772 they were both living in Bradford, Essex County, MassachusettsG.1

Records of the Bradford Second Congregational Church at East Bradford, later Groverland, Mass. record the marriage of an Abel Saunders and Rebecca Savory on 5 Decmeber 1797.3 If this is the same Abel then it likely means that his first wife Hannah Wallingford died before that time.

Marriage*He married Mary Balch, daughter of William Balch and Rebecca Bailey, on 27 April 1798 in Bradford, Essex County, MassachusettsG. Records of the Bradford Second Congregational Church at East Bradford, now Groveland, Mass. give a date of April 19th, while a family Bible that in 1907 was in the possession of Mrs. Charles Wallingford of Groveland gives a date of April 17th.2
Death*Nathaniel died on 20 February 1837 in Bradford, Essex County, MassachusettsG. He was buried in the old cemetery in Groveland (formerly East Bradford), Mass.34,5
Nathaniel's grandfather James Wallingford, in his will dated 3 December 1776, left to his grandson Nathaniel Wallingford, representative "of my son Nathaniel deceased", the dwelling house "lately improved by his father and also the barn and also the one half of my homestead Excepting four Acres of Land which I bought of Isaac Platts, and that piece of Land in the Common field so called his Mother to have the Improvement of the Said Land and house till he comes to the Age of twenty one years or as Long as She Remains my Son Nathaniel Walingford's widow... and if my sd Grandson Should die before he is twenty one years of age then I give the premises to my Son Nicholas."
Ten years later, on 21 March 1797, a division of real estate was made by Lemuel Wood of Boxford, and Silas Hopkinson and Thomas Wood of Bradford, the latter possibly being the second husband of Nathaniel's uncle Nicholas' wife Sarah. This was the land left to the Nathaniel and his mother for their use until his 21st birthday, which had just occurred. In the division his uncle Nicholas (or more likely his widow and family as he was deceased by this time) received 8 acres, 100 poles and Nathaniel received 6 acres, 60 poles. The latter piece of land was bounded by the original dwelling house of James Wallingford where his widow and daughters Betty and Judith were still living.6

Nathaniel was a cordwainer in Bradford.7

Administration of the estate of Nathaniel Wallingford, yeoman of Bradford, deceased intestate, was granted to Charles Wallingford of Bradford, cordwainer on 14 March 1837. Four days earlier his mother Mary, sister Rebecca Boynton (with her husband Osgood G. Boynton), and sisters Sophia and Clarissa Wallingford had all requested that he be the administrator. He gave bond with Daniel Stickney, Esq., and Ira Hopkinson, both of Bradford, on 21 March 1837. An inventory of his estate was made 17 April 1837 by Daniel Stickney, William S. Balch and Aaron Hardy, all of Bradford. The estate was valued at $8392.27, with $3290 being real estate and the remainder personal estate. There are four pages of personal items listed in the inventory. The land includes 18 acres with buildings in Bradford on the east side of the road from Haverhill to Newburyport, about 29 acres of land with buildings on the west side of the road, about 11 acres of salt meadow in Rowley, and 1 1/2 acres of meadow land near the house of Eliphalet Savory in Bradford. Also on pew in the Bradford East Parish meetinghouse. The widow Mary, who was said to be "advanced in age and has four children", received $150 from the estate on 10 August 1837.8

Records of the Bradford Second Congregational Church at East Bradford, now Groveland, Mass. give a date of April 19th, while a family Bible that in 1907 was in the possession of Mrs. Charles Wallingford of Groveland gives a date of April 17th.3
Death*Mary died of "dropsical consumption" 9 or 10 July 1847 in Bradford, Essex County, MassachusettsG. She was buried in the old cemetery in Groveland (formerly East Bradford), Mass.45,6
She was called Polly in her marriage record. The book "American Samplers" by Ethel Stanwood Bolton and Eva Johnston Coe (New York: Weathervane Books, 1973) has on page 30 the following listing: "BALCH, POLLY. [Cir. 1788.] Born December 3, 1776. 8 1/2" x 11 3/4". 3 alphabets. Cross-stitch. Border of wild roses, thistles, clover. Name of Clarissa Wallingsford at bottom." At the time it was in the possession of a Miss Lucasta J. Boynton. No addresses were given for the owners. Clarissa Wallingsford is obviously her daughter.

Death*Charles died of typhoid fever on 27 September 1885 in Groveland, Essex County, MassachusettsG.4
Charles was a shoe manufacturer living in Bradford at the time of his marriage, which probably should be taken to mean that he worked in a shoe factory. When their son Byron was born in 1846 they were living in Bradford and Charles gave his occupation as yeoman. They were living in Groveland, Mass. when the 1850 census was taken. Given that the town of Groveland was formed from Bradford in 1850, they may have been living in the same place and only the name of the town changed. Living in the same household with them in 1850 was the family of Edward and Mary O. Hills.5 Charles' occupation was farmer. In 1851 when daughter Mary was born Charles was a manufacturer living in Groveland.

In the 1855 Mass. state census they are living in Groveland with their two children and Charles was a manufacturer.6 In the 1860 federal census their property in Groveland is listed as being worth $4000, with personal property worth $2500. Charles gave his occupation as farmer. Living in the same dwelling but listed as a separate family are Nathaniel and Sarah L. James, and Charles' sister Clarissa, listed as Carrie, is also in the same dwelling.7 Clarissa had been living with their other sister Sophia in a house nearby, but she had recently died in 1856. The 1865 Mass. state census found them in a similar situation, the only differences being the absence of the James couple and the fact that son Byron is listed as a shoemaker.8 When the 1870 census was taken Charles and Elizabeth, their daughter Mary, and his sister Clarissa were living in Groveland. He was a farmer with real estate valued at $3500 and personal property worth $3800.

The Balch Genealogy adds children Thomas and Fanny to this family9. The copy of this book at the N.H. State Library, however, has some comments written in by a user. Where it reads that they had four children someone had crossed out "four" and written in "two" then made some cryptic marks near Thomas and Fanny that may imply that they aren't really from this family. Given the census information on this family it seems unlikely that they had any children other than Byron and Mary unless, as is possible, they died young between the censuses. In 1910 Elizabeth was living at 150 Main St. in Groveland, the home of her daughter Mary and her husband Thomas Finney, and it stated that she was the mother of two children, both of whom were then living.

Birth*Byron S. Wallingford was born on 23 July 1846 in Bradford, Essex County, MassachusettsG. The 1867 birth and death records of his daughter Mary, as well as his own marriage and death certificates (the latter gives his full date of birth) says he was born in Groveland, Mass. Groveland was formed from the town of Bradford in 1850, four years after Byron was born, so he was obviously born in that part of Bradford that later became Groveland.1,2
Marriage*He married first Lusetta F. Sargent, daughter of Joseph Sargent and Mary (?), on 14 January 1867 in Salisbury, Essex County, MassachusettsG. They may have been married in Amesbury, as the marriage was recorded in both Amesbury and Salisbury. The bride lived in Amesbury while the clergyman, Albert G. Merton, was from Salisbury. Byron was a clerk living in Boston at the time. This marriage ended in divorce.34
Marriage*Byron married second, Isabelle Victoria Bohen, in 1874.5
Death*Byron died of Bright's Disease, on 15 August 1910, at home, 157 Main St., in Groveland, Essex County, MassachusettsG, at age 64. He was buried in Ridgewood Cemetery in Groveland on August 16th..6
Byron was listed as a shoemaker at age 18 in the 1865 Massachusetts state census of Groveland, Mass.,7 and was still called a shoemaker on his death certificate in 1910.

There is a Byron Wallingford, aged 23, a store clerk born in Massachusetts living in Clinton, Iowa in the 1870 census. With him is an 18-year-old woman whose name isn't clearly legible but may be Clarissa, working in a printing office and also born in Mass. It is unknown who this is but it may be a wife who is as yet unaccounted for. Byron also has a check mark in the column that reads, "Male citizens of U.S. of 21 years of age and upwards whose right to vote is denied or abridged on other grounds than rebellion or other crime." There is no explanation as to why this is so. There is no other Byron Wallingford found in the 1870 census indexes on HeritageQuest so this is likely our man.

We know that Byron married in Salisbury, Mass. in 1867 and had a daughter who was born in Amesbury, Mass. (where they lived at the time, with Byron employed as a clerk) less than two months after the wedding and died at the age of six months. This marriage ended in divorce and he married again to a woman born in Ohio and they had a child born in Groveland, Mass. in 1876. From this it would seem plausible that the young Byron married his first wife because she was pregnant with his child, then, when the child died, he left her and headed out west, leaving him in Iowa in 1870. He met his second wife out in that area of the country but returned home to Mass. by the time their child was born. He can't be found in the 1880 census indexes on ancestry.com or familysearch.org, however.

He is likely the Byron Wallingford who is listed in the 1909 Portland, Maine city directory as living at 158 Congress St. With him is a Miss Mary E. Wallingford, likely his daughter, who was living in Portland when he died in 1910.8

Birth*Lusetta F. Sargent was born between 1841 and 1844 in Newton, Rockingham County, New HampshireG. Place of birth was Newton on her marriage records and in her daughter Mary's 1867 death record. She was age 9 in the 1850 census, 22 when she first married in January 1867, and 34 at her second marriage in November 1877. On her first marriage record her parents' names were John S. and Martha Sargent, yet the 1850 census clearly shows Lucetta living with Joseph and Mary.1 Her name has been spelled variously as Lucetta, Lusetta and Luzetta.2
Marriage*She married first Byron S. Wallingford, son of Charles Wallingford and Elizabeth H. Palmer, on 14 January 1867 in Salisbury, Essex County, MassachusettsG. They may have been married in Amesbury, as the marriage was recorded in both Amesbury and Salisbury. The bride lived in Amesbury while the clergyman, Albert G. Merton, was from Salisbury. Byron was a clerk living in Boston at the time. This marriage ended in divorce.34
Marriage*She married second Jacob Goodwin, son of Moses Goodwin and Jerusha Beacom, on 24 November 1877 in Salisbury, Essex County, MassachusettsG. Their marriage was recorded both in Amesbury, Mass. (where the bride and groom both resided) and in Salisbury, where their clergyman, Albert Morton, was from. Salisbury is assumed to be their place of marriage but neither record actually states where it took place. At the time, Jacob worked as a hatter. It was the second marriage for both of them.5
