Birth*Thomas York was born on 29 March 1787.1
Marriage*He married first Mary Chapman in 1811. She was from Newmarket and he was from Lee.2,3
Marriage*Thomas York married second Deborah Elkins in 1817 in Lee, Strafford County, New HampshireG. She was Mrs. Deborah Hanscom when they married. They were both from Lee. The undated marriage follows immediately after on on 11 Feb, but there is nothing to suggest that it took place the same day. Most of the marriages on the page have no date besides being listed under a particular year.4,3
Marriage*Thomas York married third Harriet Bartlett on 13 April 1834 in Lee, Strafford County, New HampshireG. Thomas was from Lee and Harriet was from Exeter.5,6,7,8
Death*Thomas York died on 11 November 1857.1,9
Burial*He was buried in the Thomas York Burying Yard in Lee Hook in Lee.10
On 13 Feb 1809 the Town of Lee, N.H. gave Thomas York their approval to sell "spiritous liquors." [Lee Town Records, state copy, 1:511]

He is probably the Thomas York found in the 1810 census of Lee with a household consisting of 1 male 10-15, 3 males 16-25, 1 male 26-44, 1 male 45+, 1 female 10-15, 2 females 26-44, and 1 female 45+. It does sound like an older couple living with a bunch of older children so would not seem to likely pertain to this Thomas, but there is no other known Thomas in Lee at this time. The fact that our Thomas is first married in 1811 argues for it being some other Thomas, such as an unknown uncle, but the Town records mentioned below frequently show that Thomas was voted a surveyor of lumber, which would be a logical thing for a chairmaker and joiner/cordwainer to do. Whether this entry pertains to this younger Thomas, or some as yet unknown older Thomas, it still leaves a big question as to who all the other people were who were enumerated in his household. His next oldest brother John York had young children in 1810 and appears to be the John enumerated in Durham, next door to Lee. It seems probable that if this was the younger Thomas then he is living in the household with a bunch of his siblings and others, and might have been the oldest York male in the household at the time so was considered to be the head of household, despite being single. The two older males in the census could be farm workers or other non-relations. There is also the fact that the 1810 census entry for his father Eliphalet has a similarly odd family makeup, omitting even Eliphalet himself, so perhaps the two households were split between the two locations with other non-relatives included in the groups.

At the 4 Mar 1810 Lee Town Meeting Thomas York was sworn in as one of three surveyors of lumber. The next Town Meeting on 13 Mar 1811 again voted him one of five surveyors of wood and lumber, but not in 1812 [Lee Town Records, state copy, 1:537, 562, 576.]

He was taxed in Lee in the year 1812, listed as having 2 cows and 1 ox but no property. Eliphalet and Elijah York were also taxed in town, with Eliphalet being the only one to have property, as well as more livestock. [Lee Town Records, state copy, 1:604]

On 4 Mar 1813 Thomas York of Lee, chairmaker, sued David Davis of Lee, husbandman, for $50 for non-payment of three notes that he signed for varying amounts over the previous few years dated 1 Dec 1809 ($4), 1 Dec 1810 ($6.19) and 5 Mar 1811 ($8.00). The second note was witnessed by Elijah York and the third by Daniel York, likely Thomas's brothers. [Strafford County Superior Court case #1813-36]

On 18 Mar 1813 John Gile and his wife Lydia Gile of Durham, “husbandman and spinster” for $100 from Thomas York of Lee, “Joiner, alias cordwainer” four acres of land and buildings in Lee beginning at the southeast corner of the orchard that was bought of Robert York by George Tuttle then by Nathaniel Stevens’ land to the road that leads from the Hook Road, then by the road to another road that leads to the mast road to Newmarket, then up that road far enough to make a parallel line back to the starting point, more particularly described in a deed made by George Tuttle conveying said premises to Lydia Gile on 4 Mar 1802. Lydia Gile relinquished, released and quitclaimed her rights to the land. Witnesses were George Tuttle and John whose last name wasn’t entered. John and Lydia appeared same day and acknowledged before J.P. George Tuttle. [Strafford Deeds, 76:530-33]

At the Town Meeting on 10 Mar 1813 Thomas was appointed as surveyor of highways for the Hook District of Lee, as well as one of seven surveyors of lumber. [Lee Town Records, state copy, 1:621-2] He was again one of six surveyors of lumber chosen at the 9 Mar 1814 Town Meeting. [1:634]

He was taxed in Lee in 1814 with 1/4 acre of orchard, 1 acre of arable land, 1 horse and 1 cow. Other Yorks taxed in Lee that year were Eliphalet, Elijah, Daniel and John. [Lee Town Records, state copy, 1:655]

Lee town records past 1815 have not yet been searched, but the last entry thus far found for him in those records was once again being appointed surveyor of lumber - one of ten - this time at the 14 Mar 1815 Town Meeting. [Lee Town Records, state copy, 1:665]

When Thomas married his third wife Harriet he was living in Lee and she was from Exeter, N.H., although the History of Durham gave her residence as Brentwood, N.H.

When the 1850 census was taken Thomas was a farmer living in Lee on property worth $2000. Living with him was 60-year-old Mary Leathers whose relationship to the family is unknown. She might be a poor resident of Lee who was boarding with Thomas. The book "Poor Relief in Durham, Lee and Madbury" on p.34 talks about how poor members of communities were frequently boarded with residents so they could be taken care of in the days before towns developed 'poor farms' to care for the indigent. It gives the names of several families this happened to and adds "...especially the Leathers family. All three towns had to maintain various members of the Leathers family."

In 1791 a road was laid out from Concord to Durham and Elijah York of Lee is listed as one of the many landowners along the way who were compensated for losses due to the construction. He was compensated 25 pounds and the road ran through 50 rods of his land. [NH Provincial and State Papers, 18: 853, 22:592] If this Elijah was really born ca. 1789 then this must refer to a different, as yet unknown, Elijah York. Either that or the State Papers transcription got the name wrong.

When the 1850 census was taken Elijah was a farmer living in Lee with real estate worth $4000. Living with him were his wife Comfort, his son David, David's son Fred B., his wife's 90-year-old aunt Elizabeth Chapman, and a 13-year-old Sarah A. Davis who is probably a relation to Comfort's mother whose maiden name was Davis.

A notice in the New Hampshire Patriot and State Gazette of Concord, NH dated 3 Apr 1810, p.3, lists a lot of people who have mail waiting for them in the Concord post office. On that list is a Daniel York of Canterbury, NH. No other currently known Daniel exists who might be this person, so perhaps this Daniel was the Lee individual who was apprenticing away in Canterbury? If not then he likely belongs to an as yet undetermined family.

The New Hampshire Gazette of 10 Apr 1821, p.3, has this notice: "Take Notice. This is to inform all persons concerned, that the subscriber has undertaken to take care of, support and maintain all the Paupers of the town of Lee, from the first day of April, 1821 to the first day of April, 1822, and has given bonds to that effect—and whereas several of said Paupers have refused to go with me to my house, where suitable provisions are made for their support, this is therefore to caution all persons against harboring or trusting said Paupers on my account, as I am determined to pay no bills for them, or furnish any support or relief for them after this date, unless they come to my house in said Lee. [Dated] Lee, April 3, 1821. DANIEL YORK"

The 22 Jun 1847 issue of The Times and Dover Enquirer, p.3 has this published notice: "Notice is hereby given, that I have this day given to my sons, Albert A. York, and Elijah S. York, and daughter, Sarah J. York, their time, to act and trade for themselves, and shall claim none of their earnings nor pay any debts of their contracting after this date." Signed Daniel York. The parentage of Mary Frost Durgin is uncertain. Her gravestone says that she was the daughter of Josiah Durgin, but the family Bible record for the Durgin and York families referenced here frequently for this family does not include her on the list of all the children of Josiah and Hannah (Stevens) Durgin. The last of their children mentioned was Stevens Durgin born in 1798 and leaves off Mary born in 1800. She was, however, included as Mary F. York wife of Eliphalet York with dates of birth and death. Leaving her off the list of Josiah's children was either an oversight by the person keeping the Bible record or she was daughter of a different Josiah. The FamilySearch Family Tree does have her included in this family, but without proof. The family of Josiah Durgin in the 1810 census does show two daughters aged 10-15, so that fits with Mary in the family. It's also possible she was an adopted member of the family, which was why she wasn't included in the family Bible. Perhaps she was born Mary Frost and adopted by the Durgins?

Some online trees have suggested that she married Job R. Durgin, whose family with wife Betsy was enumerated in the 1850 census of Lee in amongst many of the Lee York families. But proof that she married Nathaniel Sides comes from the Durgin familiy Bible that gives the birth and death dates for Elisa York, daughter of Eliphalet and Elizabeth (Tuttle) York, as being the same date as the death record found in Portsmouth for Elizabeth Sides.
