| A Private David York appears on a return of Capt. David Copp's Company stationed at Pierce's Island in Portsmouth, N.H. on 5 Nov 1775. [New Hampshire, U.S., Revolutionary War Records, 1675-1835, Muster rolls and petitions, 1710-1778, ]
Private David York appears on a pay roll of Jeremiah Gilman's Company of militia in Col. Stickney's Regiment and General Stark's Brigade marched to reinforce the Northern Continental Army on 20 Jul 1777. A Sergeant John York was also on the list but the relationship is unknown. Time in service for the company was 2 months and 11 days. New Hampshire, U.S., Revolutionary War Records, 1675-1835, Muster rolls and petitions, 1777-1779,
He doesn't appear in the 1790 or 1800 censuses so may have died before that[ time. There is a David York in the 1810 census of New Durham but that individual was aged 26-45 so not likely to be a man born in 1752. There is a Widow Susannah York on a 1784 New Durham tax list [New Durham Town Records, 1:342], right above Ens. John York. At the 1781 New Durham Town Meeting they voted to "take off and remit the Widow Yorks Rate for Year 1782." [New Durham Town Records, 1:115] Likely this same Susannah York is found in the 1790 census of New Durham with one male under sixteen and two females. Might Susanna be David's widow, and the David in New Durham in 1810 their son?
There also is a Widow Elizabeth York in the 1790 census of Middleton who might be his widow, but more likely is the widow of his uncle Josiah and is discussed under her record. |

Birth* | Mary York was born on 10 June 1759 in Newmarket, New HampshireG.1,2 |
Marriage* | She married James Palmer before 1794.3,4 |
Death* | Mary York died after 6 August 1832 probably in Sandwich, Strafford County, New HampshireG. She was living in Sandwich when she deposed on that date.5 |
| Proof of her marriage to a Palmer comes from a deposition regarding her brother Benjamin's Revolutionary War pension application she made on 8 Aug 1832 when she was Mary Palmer living in Sandwich, N.H. Her husband is not specifically mentioned in any of the papers in the pension file, but twice the records record the names of the three people who vouched for his service, one being Mary Palmer, another being a fellow soldier named Jacob Davis, but with the third being named as John Palmer in one place and James Palmer in another. And while there are written depositions by Mary and Jacob there is no deposition included from John/James Palmer. So we are left to make guesses as to, one, whether that John/James is actually her husband and, two, if so, which name is correct? Census records from Sandwich in 1830 show one John and two James Palmers living in town. The family of John Palmer included a male in his 40s and a female in her 50s. One of the James Palmers had a male and female both in their 50s, but the other James has one with both in their 70s. This would be the correct age for Mary born in 1759 so we will call her the wife of James Palmer unless other evidence is found.
More confusion arises when we try to determine the parentage of this James Palmer. An excellent Palmer Genealogy published in 1998 by John Calvin Palmer titled "A genealogical record of the descendants of William Palmer of Hampton, New Hampshire, 1638" does not have the marriage of a Mary York to any Palmer, which means there is likely no other evidence out there that will provide information on this marriage other than the pension files of Benjmain York. It is understandable that the author was unable to locate that. He does have this James Palmer who was living in Sandwich with his wife in 1830, but all he knew about his wife was that her name was Mary. This was from a deed dated 25 Oct 1810 in which he was a husbandman from Tamworth, N.H. when he and his wife Mary deeded land in Middleton. The author suggests that James and Mary had moved from Middleton to Tamworth somewhere between 1785 and 1794, although doesn't explain why he uses those dates. James Palmer was enumerated in 1800 and 1810 in Tamworth, but the 1820 census for that town is missing. The author was unable to find any records of their deaths. This James Palmer was born ca. 1765 in Newmarket to a John Palmer, according to the author, and he says that he was likely living with his parents at the time of the 1790 census and married Mary before 1794. There was a James (and a John) Palmer both enumerated in Middleton in 1790. The author believes that it is 'highly probable' that the James in Middleton in 1790 was a different man, son of James and Susannah (Goodwin) Palmer of Newmarket. Susannah Goodwin was the sister of Mary's father Benjamin's possible first wife, although that marriage itself is highly speculative. But it does show yet another connection between the Palmer and York families both in Newmarket, in Middleton, and in Sandwich for many decades. The two James Palmers referred to here were second cousins, their grandfathers James and John being brothers. It's possible that the author got the two Jameses mixed up and the one who married Mary Palmer was actually the son of James and Susannah (Goodwin) Palmer, but without a lot more research it would be difficult, if not ultimately impossible, to determine. So the parentage of Mary's husband James Palmer is not included here. It is likely either John Palmer and wife Rachel or James Palmer and wife Susannah Goodwin. [Palmer genealogy pp.52, 86, 142-4]
She was alive and a resident of Sandwich, N.H. when she deposed for her brother's Revolutionary War Pension in 1832, but no further information on her is known.6 |

- John Calvin Palmer, A Genealogical Record of the Descendants of William Palmer of Hampton, New Hampshrie, 1638 (Decorah, IA: Anundsen, 1998), o,144. This genealogy only identifies his wife as Mary, but as they were living in Sandwich, NH in 1830 two years before Mary Palmer of Sandwich deposed in her brother Benjamin York's pension case, it seems logical that his wife was Mary York. Date of marriage comes from the genealogy and is probably based on them having four children under 10 in the 1800 census, but they also were enumerated with two females 16-26 so would have been married much earlier if those were their children. Mary would have turned 35 in 1794 so quite old for a first marriage.
