Capt. Benjamin York

| Benjamin York (origins unknown) married Esther (—), who appears in 1830 as Esther York from Hermon, Maine. The existence of this York marriage, and the identification of the couple’s children, are established indirectly through Massachusetts probate proceedings for Esther’s son by an earlier marriage, Amasa Baveridge (surname also recorded in variant forms as Babbage/Babbidge/Beveridge). Amasa’s Newburyport, Massachusetts, death record states that Amasa “Babbage” died there 10 Oct. 1828 and that he was “from Sedgwick, Maine.” In 1830, Essex County (Mass.) probate was opened for Amasa Baveridge, mariner, late of Newburyport, who died intestate. In a letter dated 19 Jan. 1830 from Hermon, Maine, filed with that estate, Esther York wrote of “my son Amasa Baveridge,” stating, “I am his mother & his father is dead & I am a widow that has lost two husbands,” thereby proving that Esther had been married twice and that Amasa was the child of her first (non-York) marriage. In the settlement of Amasa’s estate, a receipt dated 29 May 1830 was executed by those described as “all the heirs,” naming Esther York, Phebe York, Solomon York, Martha York, John York, William York, and Olive Baveridge. The execution of the receipt further shows John York signed “by Solomon York,” and that Esther (her mark) York signed for Olive Baveridge and William York, indicating that John, Olive, and William did not personally execute the receipt (most plausibly because of minority, absence, incapacity, or inability to write). Read together, these documents support that Esther’s York children—Phebe, Solomon, Martha, John, and William—were the children of her second marriage to the a Mr. York and were maternal half-siblings of Amasa Baveridge; they also identify Olive Baveridge as Amasa’s sibling (very likely full sibling of Esther’s first marriage) and show the family’s geographic connections from Sedgwick, Maine, to Hermon, Maine, with Amasa dying in Newburyport, Massachusetts. The gravestone of Capt. William York and his wife Esther in Hermon, Maine is surely the same Esther was first married to a Babbage.
Benjamin York served as a private in Captain Ebenezer Buck’s company during the 1779 Penobscot Expedition, one of Massachusetts’ largest Revolutionary War campaigns. He entered service on July 30, 1779, as part of the land forces sent to dislodge the British from Fort George at Castine, in what was then the District of Maine. York remained with the expedition for seventeen days, participating in the American siege operations before the arrival of British naval reinforcements forced a retreat. His service reflects the short-term volunteer militia mobilizations that supported Massachusetts’ coastal defense efforts during the war. [Mass. Soldiers & Sailors of the Rev. War, 17:1007] This company of soldiers was drawn largely from the Bucksport area where Captain Ebenezer Buck was from, and Bucksport is very close to Hermon. There may have been another Benjamin York in the area that this Rev. War service applies to - the one who married Abigail Read. There is also the slight possibility that they are one in the same man.
The 1850 census record for his (presumed) son Solomon shows Solomon as having been born in New Hampshire 37 years earlier. If true, it may mean that our Benjamin came from a N.H. branch of the family, and if so, he likely was not the Benjamin who saw service on the Penobscot Expedition during the Revolutionary War.
On 6 Nov 1818 Julius Hewes of Hermon, Maine, yeoman, for $150 sold to Benjamin York of Hampden, Maine, mariner, land in Hermon next to his own land. Size of the lot not mentioned. Elizabeth wife of Julius released her right of dower. Witnessed by Chase Parker and Josiah Kidder. Signed by Julius and Betsy Hewes. [Penobscot Deeds, 16:438] This deed is likely for our Benjamin and perhaps indicates when he first came to Hermon, and where from. The two towns are less than seven miles apart.
The 1820 census found them in Hermon, Maine with 2 males under 10, 1 male 10-16, 1 male 45+, 1 female under 10, 1 female 10-16, 1 female 16-26, 1 female 26-45, 1 person engaged in agriculture. This lines up well with the known children, although we don't have dates of birth for most of them. |

| Esther was living in Hermon, Maine, possibly with her children, when she wrote the following letter that appeared in her son Amasa Babbage's probate records:
Hermon January 19th 1830 Mr Samuel Newman Sir I take the liberty to address a letter to you altho a stranger to me as I have no acquaintance in Newburyport about 14 months ago I received information from Mr Christopher Otis of Sedgwick that my son Amasa Beveridge was dead and he said that he received a letter from Mr Noise [Noyes] (I believe his christian name was Samuel) with whom my son died and that my son left some property that could be obtained as soon as a proper course could be taken I was informed that you was a suitable man to look into such business and also acquainted in such matters Dear Sir I am a widow and have small children in care & poor & no son with me capable of doing such business I wish Sir you would do me the favour to go to the Mr. Noise and look the whole matter up and [find out] how much [probable] property my son left and in what it [consisted] & what the probable amount of debts was that he owed and whether an administration is necessary if an administration is necessary I should be glad to have you appointed administrator if you would consent to it I wish Sir you would remember me in the case and write me a letter as soon as you conveniently can and let me know whether you will do my business and what is necessary for me to furnish to you and as many particulars relative to the whole concern as you shall think necessary pray Sir think me not trespassing upon the rules of civility in thus addressing you for I am under the necessity of making a friend of some one and I am informed you are a [humane] clever man and you shall be well paid for all your trouble I do not know but my son usually spelt his name Amasa Babbidge I am his mother & his father is dead & I am a widdow that has lost two husbands thus from your humble servant [signed] Esther York Bangor Feby 18th 1830 Mr S Newman. Sir I suppose the Mr Noyes referred to must be Nath’l Noyes. you will find out. the writer of the above wished me to assist her in the business referred to [which] you would inform my Son Smith what property there is & he can mention it in a letter to me. or you can write me if you think best. from your most ob’d Serv’t [signed] John Pearson
She is very likely the 74-year-old Esther York, born in Maine, living in the household of Job (30) and Sarah (34) York of Hermon, Maine with two young children, Benjamin T. York (4) and Mary C. York (1). Job is likely her son John, as other census records identify him that way. "Job" was a farmer with land worth $80. All of them were born in Maine. He and Esther are 44 years apart in age, so the relationship might be other than mother/son. <https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HY-DTD3-SPV> |

| Amasa Babbage (also recorded as Baveridge, Beveridge, and Babbidge) was in Newburyport, Mass., at the time of his death, and his death record stated that he was of Sedgwick, Maine. His probate proceedings opened in 1830 in Essex County under the name Amasa Baveridge, he is described as a mariner, late of Newburyport, deceased intestate. The inventory of his estate reflects a modest maritime livelihood, including navigation instruments (a quadrant and ephemeris), two silver watches, wearing apparel, books, several bags of coffee, and funds on deposit in a savings institution, with no real estate recorded. Administration of his estate was granted to Samuel Newman of Newburyport. Amasa apparently died unmarried and without issue, and his estate was distributed in 1830 to his surviving mother and siblings in accordance with the laws of intestate succession then in force. |

| Marriage* | He married Lucy A. Webber circa 1835.2 |
| His family is found in the 1840 and 1850 censuses of Hermon, Maine. In 1840 his family consisted of 1 male 20-30, 1 male 70-80, 1 female under 5, and 1 female 30-40. Who the male in his 70s was is unknown, but perhaps he is Lucy's father or one of their uncles.
In 1850 he and his wife and four daughters were still in Hermon. Solomon was a farmer on land worth $800.
Various death dates are provided for him in online trees, but none include sources and his actual death record has not been located. At present nothing is known of him after the 1850 census. |

| The 1850 census found John living in the town of Hermon, Maine with his wife, two children, and 74-year-old Esther York who is presumably his mother, but might be another older relation. He was enumerated under the name of Job, which appears to be a mistake but might be a nickname he used. He was a farmer who owned real estate worth $80.
In 1860 the Hermon census has him as a farmer on land worth $2000 and a personal estate worth $600. John's state of birth on that record reads Massachusetts, perhaps because in 1819 Maine was a part of Mass.? But the 1850 census said he was born in Maine, so it's an open question. |
