Thelma Joyce Tavis died on May 16. She was born in 1916 in Elizabeth City, N.C. Thelma, known by her friends as T.J., was a Mountain Area resident for many years. She was an active community volunteer, art teacher, and loving friend and mother. She is survived by her three daughters; Barbara Lyden; Sandra Semtner; Joanne Baughman; her son John Tavis; her ten grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.5

Sandra Lou Semtner, who led one of the largest reforms of welfare in the nation, died on April 20 after a short battle with cancer. She was 78. “Sandy” to friends and family, retired to Mariposa
25 years ago after a 35-year career with the Los Angeles Department of Public Social Services. Sandy began her career as a field case worker after graduating with honors from Occidental College. She became Special Projects Chief for Los Angeles County Social Services and in the 1990s supervised the launch of the GAIN (Greater Avenues of Independence) program which offered clients vocational training and education to move from welfare to the workforce. Sandy would tell you her greatest achievement was the creation and nurturing of her family, raising her daughter, Nancy Semtner, and helping to raise her goddaughter, Nancy Crist. Sandy had strong opinions that she did not hesitate to share. In the last few months before her passing, she was deeply distressed by emerging threats to abortion rights and attacks on LGBTQ communities. In retirement, she was a volunteer with Mariposa Soroptimists and supported its work helping women achieve career goals. She also loved and supported the local arts community and participated in the Senior Arts Group and Yosemite Western Artists. Sandy is survived by her sister Bobby Lyden and brother John A. and Deanna Tavis; daughter, Nancy Semtner; and grandchildren Frankie and Mariah Fernandes; goddaughter Nancy and Robert Crist and daughter Maya; and many nieces, nephews and close friends. Sandy was preceded in death by her parents, Thelma and John R. Tavis, and sister Jo Baughman. A celebration of life for friends and family is planned for May 7 at the River Rock Inn in Mariposa from 3 to 6 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donation to the Mariposa Soroptimists.3

John (Jack) Lee Baughman was born on Oct. 12, 1940, to George Harold Baughman and Gertrude Patricia Levendoski in Michigan City, Indiana. Jack attended St. Mary's grade school and Marquette High School. After graduation, Jack left Michigan City to attend Pasadena Community College. It was there that he met his soulmate and lifetime love, JoAnne Tavis. They were married in 1963 in Pasadena, California and loved each other until JoAnne's death in 2020. In 1997, Jack and Jo retired to New Port Richey, Florida. They enjoyed more than 20 years in the sunshine. After JoAnne passed, Jack came to live in Liberty Lake, Washington, near his daughter. The caring staff of Guardian Angels Assisted Living adored him, and he was a very popular resident. He passed peacefully after a two-week illness. Jack leaves two children, Patricia Baughman (Steve Carlson) and John Baughman (Laura Mitchell); as well as three grandchildren, David, Sarah and Emily Baughman. He also leaves his lifelong friend of more than 75 years, Dr. LeRoy Smith, whom he met as an altar boy at age 6. Jack will be missed by all. Jack will join Joanne at Grace Memorial Gardens in Hudson, Florida.6
