Birth* | Fanny Bailey was born in 1807.1 |
Marriage* | She married Hawley Smith, son of Isaac Smith and Hannah Hawley, in 1824.2 |
Death* | Fanny died on 16 March 1884 in Attica, Wyoming County, New YorkG.3 |
| The source including her as a member of the family of Aaron Bailey and Elizabeth Wallingford is an unreliable one. Another unreliable web source, the Rogness, Yerington, Wade, Sorensen, Overbeck, Osborn, and Fetters family genealogy at Rootsweb's Worldconnect (viewed 8 Dec 2002) has this Fanny, wife of Hawley Smith, as daughter of another Aaron Bailey and his wife Mary Winchester. She is included in this Wallingford genealogy just on the possibility that the second source is wrong. Two infant children of Hawley and Fanny Smith were buried in the Attica Center Cemetery in Attica, New York in 1828 and 1831.4 One was named Joel, as was one of Fanny's brothers, which would give more credence to the idea that Fanny who married Hawley Smith was a member of this family. |

| She was not listed as a child of Aaron and Elizabeth in Spaulding's "An Account of Some of the Early Settlers of West Dunstable, Monson, and Hollis, N.H.", and her inclusion here comes from a less than reliable source. Edward George Wallingford
M, b. 29 June 1860, d. 28 November 1914
This research is a work in progress, taken from sources of varying reliability. The information should be verified before being relied upon.
Birth* | Edward George Wallingford was born on 29 June 1860 in Mariaville Village, Duanesburg, Schenedtady County, New YorkG.1 |
Marriage* | He married Eliza Hooley, daughter of Edward Hooley and Bridget Canfield, on 2 September 1883 at St. Joseph's Church in Green Island, Albany County, New YorkG.2 |
Death* | Edward died on 28 November 1914 in Green Island, Albany County, New YorkG. She was buried in St. Peter's Cemetery in Brunswick, N.Y.32 |
| Edward is probably the "Joseph" Wallingford enumerated as a two-month old in his parents' household in 18604. "Joseph" is missing in 1870 yet Edward is listed there as aged 11, so should have been in the 1860 census as well. There are other explanations for this, but the most likely at the moment, in the absence of further research, is that there was a name change, or possibly the census enumerator made a mistake.2 He is likely the "E. Wallingford" listed as living at 146 George St. in Green Island, New York in the 1890 city directory for Troy, N.Y.5 The 1910 census of Green Island has Edward and Eliza living at 154 Paine St., and other Wallingfords are living at 144 and 170 Paine.2 |

Joseph Nicholas Wallingford
M, b. August 1811, d. possibly ca. 1878
This research is a work in progress, taken from sources of varying reliability. The information should be verified before being relied upon.
Birth* | Joseph Nicholas Wallingford was born in August 1811 in Montreal, QuebecG. He was 38 in the 1850 census, 39 in 1860 and 57 in 1870. The 1860 census appears to be in error. He was baptised on August 31, 1811 in Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal with the name Josef Wallingford. He was called Joseph Nicholas but later went by just Nicholas.1 |
Marriage* | He married third Margaret McCloskey say 1858. It seems that they would have been married in New York, since Margaret's first family appears to have been from there, but there also is a possible record of baptism for their first child Joseph up in Ottawa, Ontario. Perhaps the child was returned to Canada to be baptised, but was born in New York.2 |
Death* | Joseph died, possibly ca. 1878, in Perkins, Quebec, CanadaG. Family tradition states that he died unexpectedly at his nephew Edouard Louis Wallingford's house in Perkins around 1878.3. |
| Nicholas was raised in Canada and apparently married there twice before emigrating to Brooklyn, Cuyahoga Co., Ohio with his second wife Julianne at some point before the 1850 census was taken on July 18th. Family tradition states that Nicholas left Montreal for the United States after accidentally killing a man in a brawl on a bridge.3 In the 1850 census Nicholas was age 38, a butcher born in Canada. His wife Juliann was 25 and also born in Canada. They had no children living with them4.
At some point his second wife apparently died and either before or after that he moved to the Albany, New York area, specifically Mariaville, a part of the city of Duanesburg. Nicholas remarried the widow Margaret McKeone and took in her four boys, John, Michael, Richard and Thomas. Nicholas, his wife Margaret, their two-month-old son Joseph, and the four McKeone boys were found there in the 1860 census of Duanesburg taken on 1 June. Nicholas 'Wellingsford' was 39, a 'bucher' born in 'Caniday', his wife Margaret was 34 and born in Ireland, and their son Joseph born in New York. The McKeone boys were 10, 8, 6, and 4, respectively, their last name spelled McCoan. Nicholas owned real estate worth $500 and personal property worth the same amount.5
That 1870 census found them still in Duanesburg, and Nicholas was still a butcher, but it said he was born in England for some reason, which is obviously incorrect. The four McKeone boys are still living there aged 19, 17, 14, and 12, their last name spelled "McCone". Nicholas was aged 57 and Margaret was 42, still born in Ireland. Their son Joseph was not listed, so presumably died. Edward was 11, and they also had a daughter Olive, 8, daughter Gai[?]hi[s?], 4, and daughter Catherine, 2. Researcher Tim Nace calls two of these Oliver and Gustus, and indeed there is an Oliver Wallingford in Green Island, N.Y. in later years that is likely one and the same.
According to his nephew Edouard Louise Wallingford, Nicholas had several children by his first wife Therese Flarimond, but no records have been found of them as yet. |

Joseph Wallingford1
M, b. circa 1768, d. 16 December 1832
This research is a work in progress, taken from sources of varying reliability. The information should be verified before being relied upon.
Birth* | Joseph Wallingford was born circa 1768, possibly in or around New York, New YorkG.2 |
Marriage* | He married first Jane Conoleau, daughter of Henri Conoblo and Marie Sauvage, on 19 December 1803 at Christ Church Anglican in Montreal, QuebecG. Joseph stated his occupation as shoemaker on his marriage certificate. |
Marriage* | He married second Genevieve Quenonblack, daughter of Henri Conoblo and Marie Sauvage, say 1811 in Quebec, CanadaG. Another researcher has been unable to find any marriage record for Joseph and Genevieve, or any baptism records for their children. As French Canadian records of the period are fairly complete, this may indicate a common law marriage, in which the children would not be allowed to be baptised.1 |
Death* | Joseph died on 16 December 1832 in Quebec, CanadaG. There apparently is a record of death for a Joseph Wallingford in Canada on this date, aged 64. He was buried in Sherbrooke or Trois Rivieres, Quebec.1 This matches nicely with our Joseph and is probably the same person, but has not been proven. |
| According to letters written by Edouard Lewis Wallingford of Perkins, Quebec, Canada on 28 Aug 1932 and 6 Mar 1933, this Canadian branch of the Wallingford family was founded by refugees from the American Revolution. In the 1932 letter he wrote: "The Canadian branch of the Wallingford Family was founded by refugees from the American Revolution. A young Nicholas Wallingford was brought to Canada by his mother from Manhattan, New York." The following year he added: "From what our father told us, his Grandfather came from New York. They were living on a farm on Manhattan Island at the outbreak of the Revolutionary War, and were I think Loyalists. My Great, Great Grandfather with one son and Great, Great Grandmother moved to Canada, with my Great Grandfather who was then young. I understand they lost their farm as they never went back."3
Edouard was the grandson of this Joseph Wallingford. If Joseph was born in 1768, yet his father was the one who was brought to Canada to escape the Revolutionary War when young [named Nicholas??], then the timeline doesn't fit. The Revolutionary War battles in and around New York City occured in 1776 when Joseph would have been about eight years old. Perhaps Edouard was confused and it was his grandfather, not his great-grandfather, who was brought to Canada while young.
The fact that the name Nicholas continues in this Wallingford family strongly suggests a relationship to our Wallingford family, but to date there have been no records of any Wallingford family found in New York City at that time. They may be an unrelated line of Wallingfords, or may be a branch of the family who moved to Maryland and Kentucky. They are treated here in this genealogy of New England Wallingfords because some members of this line moved to New England and New York.
Charles Wallingford, author of a manuscript Wallingford genealogy4, believed that Joseph was of the 4th generation, descended from Nicholas (3), Benjamin (2) and the immigrant Nicholas (1). If true then the Canadian line would come from Benjamin Wallingford of the second generation who moved to Maryland. There is a problem with dates, however, as Nicholas (3) was apparently born in 1703 and would not likely be father of Joseph born in 1768 and the the grandfather of children born in the early 1800s. If the Canadian Wallingfords do stem from this line, there is likely a missing generation or two.
Joseph may have had other children by either wife. Other family oral history mentions children Edward and Jennie by the second wife. In some genealogies he is referred to as Joseph Nicholas Wallingford, and apparently his grandson Edouard Louis Wallingford is the one who stated his name this way. Original records appear to only call him Joseph, however, and it was unusual in those days for individuals to have middle names. |
