Minigan of Salem; two daughters Ann Marie Kent of Beverly and Margaret M. Pedro of Peabody; two sisters, Anna Shepard of Danvers and Katherine Tindley of Essex; eight granchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was the daughter of the late John J. and Mary L. (Brawders) Powers. A funeral Thursday from the Campbell Funeral Home will be followed by a funeral Mass at 9 a.m. in St. Mary Star of the Sea Church.5 |

Frederick J. "Cookie" Harney Sr., 86, of Salem, a retired fire captain and acting deputy chief, husband of the late Susan (Minigan) Harney, died Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2002 in the Rosewood Nursing Center in Peabody. Born and raised in Salem, he was the son of the late Frederick A. and Mary (McCarthy) Harney. He was educated in the Salem school system and was a graduate of Salem High School. Mr. Harney was employed for 29 years as a firefighter for the City of Salem, and was an acting deputy fire chief for 15 years until his retirement in 1971. He was also associated with his wife in the operation of the former Mrs. Harney's Nursery School in Salem. A longtime resident of Salem, he and his wife moved to Longboat Key, Fla., at the time of his retirement. He resided there for 18 years before returning to Salem four years ago. He was a member and past president of the St. Mary Star of the Sea Church Men's Club in Longboat Key, and a member of the Salem firefighters' union. He is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Susan Ellen and Brian Walsh of Delmar, N.Y; two sons and daughters-in-law, Frederick Jr. and Pauline Harney of Salem, and Richard and Claudia Harney of Peabody; seven grandchildren, Karen and her husband Vincee DiGilio, Kathy, Carolee and Emily Harney, Elizabeth and Erik Walsh, and Kevin Harney; two great-grandchildren, Riley and Cormac DiGilio; and several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late William and Richard Harney.9 |

Surviving him are his wife, Mrs. Mary J. Minigan; two daughters, Mrs. Fred J. Harney of Salem and Miss Mary E. Minigan of Beverly; three sons, Richard T., Robert J. and William J. Minigan; two sisters, Mrs. Henry S. Heffernan and Miss Mary E. Minnigan [sic]; also four grandchildren.4 |
