Birth* | Jonathan Smith was born circa 1640, probably in Hampton, New HampshireG. He was aged 68 in Aug 1708 and 72 in 1712. Place of birth is assumed as his family lived there at the time.1 |
Marriage* | He married Mehitable Holdred, daughter of William Holdred and Isabel (?), on 25 January 1670 in Haverhill, Essex County, MassachusettsG.1,2 |
Death* | Jonathan Smith died say 1725 in Exeter, New HampshireG. Both place and approximate year are mere guesses.3 |
| By occupation he was a brickmaker, a trade he likely learned from John Wooden, from whom he bought land at North Plain in Hampton in 1671. After spending his early years in Hampton he moved to Exeter, purchasing 15 acres and a house there from Samuel Leavitt in June 1667. He was a constable in 1699. In 1706 he deeded to his son Israel flats in Hampton, which he received from his father, the flats never to be sold, but to go to Israel's heirs.4 |

Birth* | Sarah West was born on 28 June 1700 in Reading, Middlesex County, MassachusettsG.1 |
Marriage* | She married Joseph Wesson, son of Thomas Weston and Elizabeth Brown, circa 1721.2 |
Death* | Sarah West died circa 1732 in Reading, Middlesex County, MassachusettsG.1 |
| The parentage of Sarah West is uncertain. Various trees on the Internet state that she is the daughter of John West and Mary Webster. But this site: http://westproj.blogspot.com/2014/04/four-sons-of-thomas-and-phebe-west.html mentions the following:
John and Mary lived out their years in Bradford. John West died possibly 1739/1740. His Will was dated 12 Apr 1739 and mentions children John, Isaac, Thomas, and daughters Mary Heath, Rebecca Gray, Sarah West, Bethia Poor, and son-in-law Thomas Coverly. An estate inventory was completed on 5 Feb 1740. This is Essex County Probate File #29352, dated 20 Apr 1741 in Bradford.
If she was called Sarah West in 1739 then she couldn't be the one who married Joseph Wesson around 1721. However, given the fact that West and Wesson/Weston are so similar, could it be that the original probate was mis-transcribed because whoever did it assumed he saw West when it actually said Weston or Wesson? Worth checking out. |

Birth* | Esther Hamblen was born on 11 September 1814 in Gorham, Cumberland County, MaineG.1 |
Marriage* | She married Daniel Wentworth, son of John Wentworth and Martha Jackson, on 3 June 1840.1,2 |
| They were living in Gorham in the 1850 census, with three children, Horatio (12), Enoch (10) and Charles E. (2). Daniel's occupation was as a cooper.
The 1860 census finds Daniel and Esther in Westbrook, Maine with three children, Enoch H. (17), Martha H. (8), and George H. (6). Daniel was employed as a day laborer.
By 1870 they had moved to Raymond, Maine, and Daniel was a farmer. Only two of their children were living with them at the time, Enoch (26) and George (14) and both worked as farm laborers. Twenty-nine year old Horatio Wentworth lived next door with 28-year-old wife Nettie. Horatio was a cooper. They had no children.
They were still in Raymond in 1880. Daniel was listed as a cooper once again. Living with them was 9 year old "son" Charlie Wentworth, who was presumably a grandson. Next door was the family of George H. Wentworth, age 24, and wife Arbina, (22). Also sons Arthur (3), and Amos (2). George was a farmer. |
