| Gershom grew up in Barnstable, Mass. and was a shoemaker and fisherman. He served four campaigns in the old French and Indian wars - one for himself, and one for each of his sons. About the year 1763 Gershom moved to Gorham, Maine with his mother and siblings, his father having died about 1756. They travelled in a sail boat and sailed up the Presumpscot river. It is said that the family made their first settlement near the foot of Fort Hill, on the road leading to West Gorham, on the thirty acres lott 34, west of was the Motley farm at the time the History of Gorham was written in the late 1800s. It was the same house that was later hauled by Gershom Hamblen across the fields to his farm on the Gray road.3 |

| Hannah Almory's assignment as daughter of Robert and Mary (Hart) Almary of Portsmouth, N.H. is unproven, but possible. We know that Robert and Mary had a daughter Hannah based on a 25 Oct 1734 bond of guardianship found in Robert's probate papers that was set on "behalf of the Children of Robert Almerry Vizt Mary near fourteen & Hana Abt Ten Years old." There is a baptism record dated 21 Apr 1723 in the North Church of Portsmouth for a Hannah Allmerry that is likely her - though it's very possible that she could have a cousin Hannah in the vicinity as well. There is an obvious date conflict here for the Hannah who married Gershom Hamblen, whose age of 77 on her April 1797 gravestone suggests a birth around 1719-20. But gravestone ages are notorious for errors, not only because in those days sometimes no one knew how old some elderly people really were, but also because the carvers occasionally made mistakes.
It seems unusual that a young woman from Portsmouth would end up marrying in Barnstable, Mass. But her husband Gershom was a fisherman and served four campaigns in the French and Indian War so could very well have met her in Portsmouth during his travels.
Amos Otis, who in the late 1800s wrote a series of genealogical articles covering early Barnstable families, says in reference to Hannah's surname (written as Almony in the Barnstable records) that it was "a name I have not met with before, perhaps Almy." David Hamblen, who was an early family genealogist who wrote articles on the early families of Barnstable and Eastham, Mass., states that Hannah came from Eastham. This assumption may be due to two early Almony marriages in Eastham. One was on 4 Sep 1723 between Timothy Cole and Martha Almony while the other is a marriage intention (no actual marriage record exists) on 22 Oct 1740 between George Almony and Phebe Smith.
Not enough research has been done on either the Almary family of Portsmouth or the Almony family of Eastham in the generations living in the early 18th century, so the verified answer to Hannah's parentage will have to wait.5 |
