Birth*Joseph Atkins was born circa 1772 possibly in Wellfleet, Barnstable County, MassachusettsG.1
Death*He died on 6 July 1815 at sea. He was mate of the sloop Pacific when he died.2
Joseph has been placed in the family of Joseph and Martha (Mayo) Atkins on the basis on nothing more than conjecture. We know that a Joseph Atkins married Apphia Gould in Orleans in 1795, but who his parents are is unproven. Based on census records we can assume he was born between 1765 and 1774. We have no birth records for Josephs born in the Orleans area in that time period who could be our man. Also, Joseph and Marth (Mayo) Atkins have no children recorded in any known sources. Searching through hundreds of family trees on ancestry.com for their family only a few have even one child attached, and that child is the Joseph who married Apphia Gould. So while that Joseph is attached to the Atkins family tree in this location, it should not at all be considered proven. Much more research is necessary.

The family of Joseph and Apphia appear in the Orleans census records beginning in 1800. A male of Joseph's age is there in 1800 and 1810, but after that - in 1820 and 1830 - Apphia appears as head of household, suggesting that Joseph died between 1810 and 1820. That is what makes the death record given for him here likely, although still not proven.

  1. In the 1800 census of Orleans Joseph was age 26-44, and in 1810 he was still 26-44, suggesting birth between 1765 and 1775. If we have him attached to the correct parents, who were married in 1769, then he was probably born between 1770 and 1775. It is not currently known where Joseph and Martha (Mayo) Atkins were living after they got married, but they were from Wellfleet when they married, so Joseph may have been born there, assuming he is their child at all.
