PEABODY: M. Joyce (Nolan) Crowley, 86, beloved wife of the late Acting Fire Chief of Salem Robert Crowley, died unexpectedly on Friday January 30, 2015, at North Shore Medical Center—Salem Hospital. Born in Salem, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Marguerite “Birdie” (Gallagher) Nolan. She grew up in Peabody and graduated from St. John’s High School. She later studied at Fisher College and worked for a short time as a secretary at A.C. Lawrence Leather Co. in Peabody. Her main passion was her dedication and devotion to her family, often referring to her grandchildren as the "jewels in her crown." Joyce and her sisters performed on the radio and around the North Shore during the 1940s as the singing Nolan Sisters, fueling a lifelong love of music. She also enjoyed travel with her husband, and had lived at Brooksby Village in Peabody for many years. She is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Neil Crowley and Marilyn Haugen of Arlington, Va., Paul and Julie E. Crowley of Beverly, and Robert Crowley and Sandra Bayley of Plainville; a daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Jerry Feltault of Topsfield; 10 grandchildren, Patrick Crowley, Kaitlin Crowley, Julie K Crowley, Timothy Crowley, Daniel Crowley, Leah Crowley, and Noah Crowley, Robert Feltault, Maura Feltault, and Emily Feltault; a sister and brother-in-law, Katharine and Leslie Ray of Peabody; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death, besides her husband and parents, by siblings Marygrace Tracchia and Richard Nolan. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to gather for her Funeral Service on Saturday, February 7th, at 10 a.m., at Brooksby Village Chapel in Peabody. A visitation will be held on Friday, from 5 to 8 p.m., in Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody. Cremation will follow the ceremony.5 |

OAKLAND PARK, Fla. — Richard "Dick" Nolan, 71, of Oakland Park, Fla. and formerly of Peabody and Lynn, died unexpectedly on Monday, Aug. 10, 2009 at his home in Florida. Born in Salem, he was the son of the late Henry and Marguerite (Gallagher) Nolan. He was raised and educated in Lynn and was a graduate of St. Mary's High School, Class of 1956. He later lived in Peabody and spent the last 20 years living in Florida. He was a member of the United States Air Force, serving as a security policeman at both Lackland AFB, Texas and RAF Alconbury, England. He was honorably discharged in November of 1963. After his military service, he began a career in retail, working for among others, Filene's in both the Boston and Natick Stores. He later worked for Analogic in Peabody in the purchasing department. He then moved to Florida where he worked as a department manager for Jordan Marsh and for the past 16 years, he was a night manager at a private time share complex in Pompano Beach, Fla. Dick liked reading, swimming, walking, and listening to music, especially opera. He is survived by two sisters, Joyce Crowley of Peabody and Katharine Ray of Topsfield, several nieces and nephews with whom he had a very special relationship, and he treated as if they were his own children. He was the brother of the late Marygrace Tracchia. ARRANGEMENTS: A private memorial service will be held on Tuesday with burial in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Peabody.2 |

Surviving are a son, Robert of Clark; a daughter, Claire Johnston of Edison; six grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday from the Boylan Funeral Home, 10 Wooding Ave., Edison, followed by an 11 a.m. Mass at St. Matthew's R.C. Church. SALEM--Robert J. Crowley, 77, retired acting chief of the Salem Fire Department, died Sunday morning, Aug. 10, 2003, at Blueberry Hill Healthcare in Beverly following a long illness. He was the husband of Joyce (Nolan) Crowley, with whom he celebrated 50 years of marriage in April. Chief Crowley was the son of the late George and Alice (Kenneally) Crowley. A lifelong Salem resident, he attended St. Mary's Grammar School and graduated from Salem High School in 1943. He attended Boston University and graduated from Salem State College with a degree in history. During World War II, he enlisted in the Navy. Trained as a corpsman, he served at the U.S. Navy Hospital in Balboa, Panama. He was recalled to active duty during the Korean War and served in Korea as a corpsman attached to the First Marine Division from the summer of 1950 to December 1951. Prior to his service in Korea, he had joined his father on the Salem Fire Department. Appointed in April 1948, he was promoted to lieutenant in 1952 and captain in 1955. In 1961, at the age of 35, he was appointed deputy chief, a position he held for more than 20 years. In 1984, he was appointed acting chief and retired in March of 1986. Following his retirement, he served on the Conservation Commission and as the commander of Salem's Veterans' Council. He was instrumental in the city's efforts to dedicate a park in honor of native son retired Gen. Albin Irzyk. He was a member and past member of numerous veterans organizations, including VFW Post 1524, American Legion Post 23, the First Marine Division Association, The Marine Corps league, the Vittori-Rocci Post, the North Shore Marines and the AMVETS. He also was a member of the New England Association of Fire Chiefs and a retired member of Local 1780 of the International Association of Fire Fighters. Chief Crowley was an avid reader with a keen interest in military history. An accomplished amateur artist, his favorite subjects were seacoast scenes of the North Shore, military figures and firefighters. Besides his wife, he is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Neil Crowley and Marilyn Haugen of Arlington, Va., Paul and Julie Crowley of Beverly, and Robert Crowley and Sandra Bayley of North Attleboro; a daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Jerry Feltault of Topsfield; and nine grandchildren, Patrick, Kaitlin, Timothy, Julie, Daniel and Leah Crowley, and Robert, Maura and Emily Feltault. He was the brother of the late George and Mary Crowley and Louise Jerzyk.4 |
