Salem City Clerk Deborah E. “Debbie” Burkinshaw, 48, died Wednesday, May 5, 2004, in Salem Hospital following a brief battle with cancer. Born in Salem, she was the daughter of Elizabeth (Williams) Burkinshaw and the late William Burkinshaw. She was raised and educated in Salem. Following her graduation from Salem High School in 1973, she continued her education at Marian Court College. While attending Marian Court, Miss Burkinshaw interned at Salem City Hall for then-City Clerk Josephine Fusco. Following her graduation in 1977, she accepted a position as clerk in the city clerk’s office. Miss Burkinshaw later served as senior clerk, registrar of voters and assistant city clerk. In 1993 the City Council appointed and confirmed Miss Burkinshaw as city clerk. A history buff with a keen interest in government, she enjoyed reading about history and traveling to places of special interest. Her travels took her to Gettysburg, Pa., and Washington, D.C., as well as to Egypt, where she visited the pyramids and the Nile River. Miss Burkinshaw enjoyed spending time with her nephew, Justin Burkinshaw of Beverly, and her niece and goddaughter, Mary Louise Burkinshaw of Lynn. She was known for her well-maintained flower gardens. In addition to her mother, nephew and niece, she is survived by four brothers and sisters-in-law, William and his wife, Carrie Burkinshaw, of Seattle, James and his wife, Carolyn Burkinshaw, of Beverly, Brian and his wife, Maura Burkinshaw, of Lynn and Christopher and his wife, Jeanne Burkinshaw, of Lynn.3 |
| Deborah was remembered in the "Reporter's Notebook" section of the paper 9 days after her death. In an editorial titled "Final Respects Paid to Burkinshaw" the paper wrote:
"This week Salem said a sad good-bye to one of its best, City Clerk Deborah Burkinshaw. A huge crowd gathered Monday at St. James Church to pay final respects to a woman who, at 48, died way too young. They listened to moving eulogies by Burkinshaw's brother, James, and by City Council President Lenny O'Leary, who worked with her for more than 20 years and really spoke from his heart. Out of respect, the clerk's office at City Hall was closed Monday morning so staff could attend the funeral. Many other city employees also went, along with a large group of past and present elected officials. We who occupy this small corner of the newspaper also offer our condolences to the family of a woman whose honesty and dedication were legendary. Once, when we failed to pick up election results, we reached Debbie at home in the wee hours of the night, and she went right back to a darkened and locked City Hall and faxed the results to us. And it was all done without complaint and without making us feel it was a big deal - which it was. There are scores of stories just like that about a city clerk who treated everyone with respect, answered questions accurately and promptly, and took her job very seriously. She set a high standard."4 |

Mary Evelyn "Monnie" Oakes, 87, of 10 Mayflower Drive, died on Friday, June 4, 2004, at the Dover Rehabilitation Center. She spent the last days of her life surrounded by family, friends, and staff members who had become friends, as she shared her stories and told jokes. She noted how important it is to be able to share laughter. Born on Jan. 6, 1917, in Sullivan, Ill., she was the daughter of the late Neal and Sarah Nance Sullivan. She and her husband were married during World War II. After the war, they settled in Rockport, Mass. She worked as a department manager for W.G. Brown’s of Gloucester, Mass., and later managed more than seven departments for Jordan Marsh of Peabody, Mass. In later years, they made their home in Gonic before moving to Lakeland, Fla., in the early 80s. She and her husband made many friends in Lakeland and enjoyed an active social life together. Both participated in many events with the Lakeland Elks Lodge 1291 and Loyal Order of Moose. After her husband’s death in 1992, she stayed in her Lakeland home remaining active with her numerous friends and sharing frequent visits from family members. In July 2000, she moved into her mother-in-law’s apartment at her daughter’s Barrington home. She kept in touch with her friends from Florida, especially Audrey Corkwell and Judy Boltier. She enjoyed reading, telling stories and jokes, doing crossword puzzles, spending time with her family and making new friends. She developed a special bond with neighbor Jeanne Sherrill, as she was able to help her through the grief resulting from the unexpected death of her mother. She will be missed by all her family and many friends. She is survived by her daughter, Lynn Robinson and husband T.J. of Barrington; sons Steve Oakes and wife Dottie of Manchester, Mark Oakes and wife Heather of Hampton; granddaughters Andrea Mayhew and husband Bruce of Manchester, Tara LeBlanc and husband, Brian of Merrimack; nephew Joe Sullivan of Hoffman Estates, Ill; and niece, Anna Mae Slapp and husband John of Kansas City, Mo; and her great-granddaughter, Grace Mayhew of Manchester. She was predeceased by her husband, Everett B. Oakes Jr; her only sibling, Harry T. Sullivan; her nephew, Richard Sullivan; and her grandson, Kurt Dietterie. She will be remembered by her family in a private ceremony and laid to rest beside her late husband in Lakeland Memorial Gardens, Lakeland, Fla. |
