| From the 17 November 1984 Tampa Bay Times of Tampa, Florida: Heart attack causes man's death at fire By DAVID K. ROGERS Pasco Times Staff Writar. LAND O'LAKES. A Land O'Lakes man who directed firefighters to a blaze consuming his daughter's double-wide mobile home Wednesday night died minutes later, apparently of a heart attack. Witnesses said Leonard M. Maietta Sr., 68, collapsed in the dirt road in front of the site as the volunteer firefighters worked to contain the fire engulfing the home owned by his daughter, Arlene Schulman. Maietta died so suddenly that first reports to the Pasco County Sheriffs Department indicated that he had possibly been struck by a passing fire truck.
The first firefighting units that responded to the alarm about midnight Wednesday found the home, located on Henry Drive in the Cypress Bayou subdivision, already destroyed by the fire. "It was thoroughly engulfed by the time we arrived," according to Louis C. Smith, one of the volunteers. "A gentleman in the road waved me down and pointed to a gate. "The first-response unit was coming up the road, so I let it pass through the gate.
"AS I BEGAN to head toward the fire, the gentleman said to look out for the power lines. 'The way the lines are snapping around here, it's about to give me a heart attack." he said. "I looked at him very closely, but it didn't look as if anything was wrong with him. The assistant chief came in and the gentleman waved him through," Smith said. The firefighters' water truck arrived about two minutes later, Smith said. The assistant chief discovered Maietta's body as he walked back to the road to guide the truck closer to the mobile home. Maietta's wife, Lena, said Friday that a Florida Highway Patrol trooper responded to the report that Maietta had possibly been hit by a fire truck. But the trooper left the scene once emergency medical technicians determined that Maietta had died of natural causes. Ms. Schulman told investigators that a malfunctioning electric space-heater in her bedroom was the likely cause of the fire. After rescuing her daughter from another bedroom, Schulman went next door to her parents' house and called the fire department. She then went back outside to find her home engulfed in flames.
Another story appeared in the Tampa Tribune of the same date, although it incorrectly states that the fire was on Friday, not Wednesday: Man collapses, dies near scene of fire. By CHIP WILSON, Tribune Staff Writer. LAND O' LAKES - A 68-year-old man collapsed and died while walking to the scene of a fire that destroyed his daughter's mobile home Friday shortly after midnight, authorities said. Leonard Michael Maietta Sr. of Henry Drive, Land O' Lakes, apparently suffered a heart attack as firefighters scurried to extinguish the blaze. The fire roused Arlene Schulman and her daughter, Deanna Lynn Janney, from their sleep. Both escaped the burning mobile home without injury.
The fire, which began at 11:30 p.m. Thursday, resulted from an electrical short in a small portable space heater that Schulman had placed in her bedroom and turned on shortly before she went to bed, officials said. Schulman said she woke up when the dog started barking and saw flames crawling up the wall of her bedroom in the mobile home according to a Sheriff's Office report. She then ran to get her daughter from her bedroom, and both fled next door to the home of Schulman's parents, Leonard and Lena Maietta. By the time Schulman stepped back outside, the fire had enveloped her home. Maietta helped the Land O' Lakes volunteer firemen direct traffic at the scene before he was stricken. "He told one of my firemen standing next to him: 'I'm gonna to have quit this, because I think I'm having a heart attack,'" Fire Chief Charlie Howard said. "He didn't appear to be sick or anything, because he kept directing the traffic for a while. Then he told us to look for the electrical wires that were arching over the mobile home. Howard said Maietta then started walking toward the fire, but because it was so dark, no one saw him collapse on the roadside.
"No one knew he was there for quite a while," he said. "I don't know how many minutes had passed." Originally, Howard said, the firemen thought Maietta was struck by a passing car or truck. But rescue workers and a deputy at the scene found no evidence he had been hit and determined he suffered a massive heart attack. Maietta had no history of heart disease and suffered from no other serious health problems, family members said. The fire took about 30 minutes for firemen to contain, Howard said, but they stayed past 2 a.m. working on it. There was no evidence of arson or other foul play, he said..6,9 |
