Marriage* | He married Martha Aarons, daughter of Barney Aaron and Phoebe Lee, on 18 December 1864 at 101 Middlesex Street in Spitalfields, Middlesex, EnglandG.1 |
Death* | Moses Morris Hart died on 27 January 1924 in London City, EnglandG. Notes say that it was "in 36 Queen's Block, Stoney Lane, Houndsditch??." It's unknown at present exactly where this location is, although there is a Stoney Lane in Aldgate, which is near Houndsditch.
Several ancestry.com family trees give him a death date of 10 Jan 1901 in Middlesex, but this is for a Moses Hart who left a widow Amelia Hart, and he was in an asylum when he died. Unless Amelia is a second wife this can't be him. |

| Some online trees confuse him with the Barnett Hart who was father of the famous American playwright Moss Hart. But that Barnett's 1901 marriage record in Manhattan, available on familysearch.org, clearly states that he had parents other than Moses and Martha (Aarons) Hart. The two Barnetts were both born in London and were roughly of the same age. Without the marriage record it is easy to confuse them. |

Birth* | Bernard Hart was born on 21 April 1912 in New York, New YorkG.1 |
Death* | He died of a heart attack on 18 August 1964 in his apartment at 240 Central Park South in New York, New YorkG.2 |
| His obituary appeared in the 19 August 1964 New York Times and read as follows:
Bernard Hart, a producer and stage manager who frequently worked with his brother, the late Moss Hart, was found dead yesterday in his apartment at 240 Central Park South. He apparently suffered a heart attack. His age was 53. Although he began his theatrical career in the shadow cast by his older, taller, more intense brother, and never fully emerged from it, Mr. Hart established a reputation in his own right. In partnership with Joseph Hyman he produced “Dear Ruth,” the successful Norman Krasna comedy, in 1944. Ten years later they offered another success, Jerome Chodorov and Joseph Fields's “Anniversary Waltz.” The producing team also presented three of Moss Hart's plays, “Christopher Blake” in 1946, “Light Up the Sky” in 1948 and “The Climate of Eden“ in 1952. Bernard Hart, who was known along Broadway as Bernie, was also stage manager of “My Fair Lady” for four years and of “Camelot” for two, both of which were staged by his brother. At his death he was stage manager of “Wonderful World of Chemistry,” the presentation at the du Pont Pavilion at the World's Fair. In his autobiography, “Act One,” Moss Hart, who died in 1961, recalled an incident that took place the day after the opening of “Once in a Lifetime,“ his first success, which he wrote in collaboration with George S. Kaufman. After reading the reviews, the two brothers took a taxi to the Music Box Theater, where it was playing. Moss Hart went to the box office and drew a $500 advance to move their parents out of a Brooklyn tenement. As his brother counted the bills, Bernie quipped, “When do they change the name of the theater to the Money Box?” The jest reduced Moss Hart to hysterics, and from then on, Bernie became known as a punster, storyteller and chronicler of Broadway. His headquarters for 30 years was the corner of the Little I Bar under the stairs at Sardi's restaurant on 44th Street, where he gathered a group of eight or nine around him at the cocktail hour and again at 11:30 P.M., after the last curtains had fallen. In 1961, on his 50th birthday, more than 200 persons attended a party for him at Sardi's. Bernie heard himself roasted and eulogized in songs and skits, and he received a suitably mounted two-by-four-inch piece of the bar. Replacing it in the bar was a brass plate that read, “Bernie Hart Schlept Here,” which may have been as bad a pun as any Mr. Hart was guilty of. There were scores of anecdotes about Mr. Hart. After the opening of “The Survivors,” which was not a success, in 1948, Mr. Hart, the co?producer, stayed away from Sardi's for a week. When he returned he was covered with bandages — on his head, across the bridge of his nose, over both eyes. Each piece of plaster bore the name of a New York drama critic. Richard Maney, the press agent, recalled a bomb scare during the run of “My Fair Lady.” Detectives searched backstage at the Mark Bellinger Theater for an hour and finally left emptyhanded. “The only bomb they found,” Mr. Hart said later, “was the original script of Ankles Aweigh.“ “Ankles Aweigh” was an elaborate revue that had been described by the critics as one of the few unmistakable nadirs in theatrical history when it opened at the same theater a season or two earlier. Mr. Hart, who was a member of the Players Club and The Lambs had no immediate survivors. A funeral service will be held Friday at 11:30 A.M. at Frank E. Campbell's, Madison Avenue and 81st Street.2 |
