His marriage record in 1853 states that he was a merchant. When the 1855 Massachusetts State census was taken he and his second wife Sarah were living with his parents in Chelsea and he was employed as a clerk. On daughter Susan's birth record in 1856 he was a bookkeeper. He is still in Chelsea in 1865 and 1870. In the former his occupation is illegible, while in 1870 he was a bookkeeper who owned real estate worth $5000 and had a personal estate worth $4500.
