His obituary appeared in the 16 July 1898 Hallowell Register and read as follows:

Charles Atkins, son of the late Captain James Atkins of Hallowell, and brother of James and Frank Atkins, died at his home in Omaha, Nebraska, Friday, July first, aged sixty-six years and nine months. He was buried in Onawa, Iowa, beside his brother George Atkins, who died four years ago this same month. He leaves a wife and daughter. The only one of his immediate family who survives him, besides his brothers already mentioned, is his sister, Mrs. T. Elliot, of Onawa, Iowa.3

Death*He died of chronic myocarditis on 28 January 1921 at Bangor State Hospital in Bangor, Penobscot County, MaineG. He had been suffering from that affliction for ten years, and had also suffered senile psychosis for two years. He had been staying in the Bangor State Hospital for 2 1/2 months before he died.2 
Burial*He was buried on 31 January 1921 in Fairfield, Somerset County, MaineG.2 
He was a tanner and ship builder by occupation, and had been living in Fairfield, Maine before he went into the hospital.2
