This research is a work in progress, taken from sources of varying reliability. The information should be verified before being relied upon.
Birth* | Elizabeth G. Wallingford was born circa October 1803. (Based on age on gravestone of 77y, 3m.) |
Marriage* | She married Jonathan Horne, son of Moses Horne and Mary Wingate, on 3 January 1843 in Rochester, Strafford County, New HampshireG.1 |
Death* | Elizabeth died on 22 January 1881. She is buried in the Haven Hill Cemetery in Rochester, N.H.2 |
| Elizabeth G. Wallingford, daughter of Jacob was baptized in Rochester on 5 September 1824.3 "Elizabeth G.W., widow of Jonathan Horne" is buried in the same plot as Jacob and Abigail (Clark) Wallingford so she is assumed to be their daughter. Also in that plot is Amos P. Wallingford, Jacob and Abigail's son, and his wife Rhoda. Her marriage date and place to Jonathan Horne is taken from Shackford, who lists her as an unconnected Wallingford by the name of Eliza. It seems very likely that that marriage applies to this Elizabeth, especially given that Jonathan's first wife died in 1841. |

Birth* | John O. Wallingford was born circa 1842 in Somersworth, Strafford County, New HampshireG. His age was 8 in the 1850 census and 19 in the 1860 census, and he was 30 when he died.1 |
Marriage* | He married Nellie P. Cook, daughter of Jedediah Cook and Lucinda Harris, on 4 October 1864 in Dover, Strafford County, New HampshireG.2 |
Death* | John died, on 23 March 1872, in Dover, Strafford County, New HampshireG. He died of disease contracted during his war service3 and was buried in Pine Hill Cemetery in Dover, N.H.4.5,6 |
| He was a 19-year old machinist living with his parents in 1860 when the census of Dover was taken.7 His widow Nellie's death certificate stated that her residence was in Dover, N.H., formerly of Wayne, Maine. |
| John served in the military. He was still a resident of Dover, N.H. when he enlisted in the 15th Regiment N.H. Volunteers on 15 October 1862, mustered in as a Sergeant Major. On the following January 18th he was appointed as Lieutenant. He mustered out in August but joined back up in the 18th N.H. in September 1864 as a Captain. He remained thus until the Civil War was over.8 He was severely wounded in an assault on Port Hudson, Louisiana on 14 June 1863.9 The siege of Port Hudson took place between 21 May and 9 July. In cooperation with Maj. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant's offensive against Vicksburg, Union Maj. Gen. Nathaniel P. Bank's army moved against the Confederate stronghold at Port Hudson on the Mississippi River. On May 27, after their frontal assaults were repulsed, the Federals settled into a siege which lasted for 48 days. Banks renewed his assaults on June 14 but the defenders successfully repelled them. On July 9, 1863, after hearing of the fall of Vicksburg, the Confederate garrison surrendered, opening the Mississippi River to Union navigation from its source to New Orleans. Total estimated casualties were 5,000 Union and 7,208 Confederate.10. |
| His obituary appeared in the 28 May 1872 Dover Enquirer and read as follows:
We are called upon to record the death of one of our most highly esteemed and promising young men, Capt. John O. Wallingford, only son of Capt. Z. S. Wallingford, who died in this city on Saturday last, after a protracted and severe illness. Many sad and silent tears were shed as the news went round, "Mr. Wallingford is dead." He had been for several years acting as Superintendent of the Cocheco Mills, and shared the respect and confidence of those associated with him in that capacity, as well as of the entire circle of his acquaintance. He early enlisted in the service of his country and served faithfully as Sergeant-Major, Lieutenant and Captain. In each position he had the confidence of the officers above him in rank, and was loved and honored by officers and men serving under him. He was for a few years a member of the City Government. He was also for several terms Commander of Charles W. Sawyer Post, G. A. R., and did much in forwarding the benevolent objects of the Order. His great heart overflowing with sympathy and benevolence toward those whose health had been ruined, or who had been widowed or orphaned by the great rebellion, he became an earnest worker to relieve their woes and carry happiness to their homes. The Post turned out at his funeral to pay their respects to their departed comrade. The Cocheco Hose Company, with numerous friends, were also present to join in the solemn service. He leaves a wife and two children, with parents and sisters, to mourn their great bereavement. His life's battle is over. His short life's work is done and well done. And however much esteemed in a public capacity, he was loved most for his manly virtues and social worth.11 |
